Bartels Teacher Named Finalist

LIVE OAK PRESERVE - LIVE OAK PRESERVE - Bartels Middle teacher Debby Dowell got an early birthday present today. The prize patrol made a surprise trip to her school to inform her that she is a finalist for Hillsborough County Teacher of the Year.

Just two days shy of the big 5-0, Dowell thought student gathered to celebrate her birthday. Instead, the instructor of reading and math burst into tears when she learned she was one of the top teachers.

"You guys are the reason I do this," she said. "You're why I come here everyday."

This means that two New Tampa teachers are finalists for the award. Chiles Elementary teacher Mary Booth also is a finalist.
