TEMPLE CREST - School district leaders are pushing forward plans to open a new school in August to relieve crowding at some University Area schools.
The Hillsborough County School Board approved the hiring of an architect for Elementary M, which will be built where Temple Heights Christian School and Baptist Church once stood.
The district hired the Architectural Practice for a fixed fee of $480,000 and Batson-Cook Construction for a fixed fee of $461,539. Cathy Valdes, the district's chief facilities offer, said renderings will be fast-tracked because the architect already has working models.
She expects a design to be done after the holiday break. Steve Ayers, the district's director of pupil administrative services, said he has held preliminary meetings with affected principals to discuss boundary issues.
The new school, 8406 N. 46th St., will relieve crowding at Cahoon and Pizzo elementary schools. He said it also should affect boundaries at Shaw and Witter elementary schools.
Ayers said he expects to hold a community meeting about the boundaries no later than February.
