UNIVERSITY AREA - A four-room addition to the University Area Community Center is under construction, with occupancy expected in late January.
The addition features two classrooms for the Prodigy arts program and two offices, said Julian Garcia, executive director of the University Area Community Development Corp., which manages the center at 14013 N. 22nd St.
The addition will cost about $600,000 for construction and furniture, as well as computers and computer wiring for one classroom, which will be a computer lab, Garcia said.
Prodigy, a diversionary program serving at-risk children and children under court supervision, started in 2000 and serves 18 sites in seven counties, Garcia said. Last year, 2,600 students participated in the Prodigy program at the community center, which opened in 1999, he added.
"We didn't have enough room for our programs. Last summer, we were having classes in the hallways," he said.
Also, some of the community development staff is using offices at the University of South Florida, and those people need to be brought to the community center complex, Garcia said.
