NEW TAMPA - Some Benito Middle students opted to extend their school day last week during the school's annual student night out.
The event offered students various after-school activities on campus under the supervision of PTSA members. Mary Ulbrich, a PTSA member, said the event is meant to provide fun for the students.
"We want to show the kids that school can be fun," she said. "It allows for more social time with their friends."
About 70 students played sports, such as basketball and volleyball, or other games, like air hockey and table tennis. Others snacked on pizza and socialized with friends.
Even Tampa Police school resource officer John Simmons got into the action, showing off his dodge ball skills in the gymnasium.
Sixth-grader Allison DePalma said she came to hang out with friends.
"I just wanted to come so I could talk with my friends and have fun," she said.
Sixth-grader Rachael Rosko said staying at school was a way to keep her from the books.
"If I wasn't here, I would be at home in my room doing homework," she said. "This is more fun."
