TEMPLE TERRACE - Most residents' interaction with the city's police department is limited to being caught on the wrong side of the law or reporting a crime.
Those who attend the free Temple Terrace Citizens Police Academy on Dec. 1 will be welcomed by police officers whose sole purpose is to give their guests a behind-the-scenes look into their role as law enforcement officials.
The all-day event includes lunch, snacks and a catered graduation dinner at which each attendee will be presented with a diploma, T-shirt and hat.
Program participants will learn about traffic regulations, driving under the influence enforcement, firearms safety, narcotics identification and marine law. They will be taught about the role of police dogs and the emergency response team. They will also watch a demonstration of the department's new firearms training simulator, which helps officers hone their skills.
Marine Officer Carl Avari-Cooper, who patrols a 16-mile stretch of the Hillsborough River from Nature's Classroom to Rowlett Park, will be among the program's presenters.
"I really enjoy getting to know the residents along the river," Avari-Cooper said. "They recognize the river's importance and the importance of keeping it safe."
Officer Karen Walter of the Crime Prevention Unit said participants also will be taken on a tour of the city's communications operations, a department that functions 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
"CPA is a great opportunity for citizens to learn about police operations and meet the officers that serve and protect our community," Walter said.
Police Chief Tony Velong founded the academy in 1991 while still a captain on the force.
"I felt the citizens would enjoy learning just what their officers do on a daily basis and what they are capable of doing under extraordinary circumstances," said Velong, who noted that the program has graduated more than 450 residents since its inception.
