Runners Sought For 5K

Published: November 28, 2007

NEW TAMPA - Organizers of Run With Pride are hoping to expand the annual event to raise more money for Pride Elementary and get the word out about fitness.

The school will hold a 5-kilometer race and 1-mile run/walk for a third year but is moving the date to Jan. 26. The event previously was held around Veterans Day.

Organizers hope the move to January, the height of the running season, will attract more interest. They hope to register 1,000 people.

"We're really trying to get the word out about the event because we wanted to make it a bigger event," said Karla Gorsky, race director.

The course will start and end at Pride and run along Kinnan Street. The course is also USA Track & Field-certified, which means high school cross country runners can run the race for points.

Registration for the 5K is $20 and includes a T-shirt and hot breakfast buffet. The money raised will be used to build a track at Pride Elementary. The track will cost $45,000.

"Our main goal is to raise awareness in the community about fitness and the issue of child obesity," Gorsky said. "If we raise money for the track, that's great, too."

Awards will be given to top runners in each age group.

Registration is $12 per person or $60 for a family. Children will receive a finisher's medal.

Pride has issued a challenge to New Tampa schools. Pride's principal and nine teachers have challenged every other school to form a team of 10 and race them. Wharton High and Hunter's Green and Tampa Palms elementary schools have signed up for the challenge.
