Group Working Toward Cattle Barons' Ball
CHANNEL DISTRICT - Members of the 2008 Cattle Barons' Ball planning committee and those interested in joining a committee gathered last week at Sling Shots Country Pop Saloon to recruit additional members and confirm plans.
The signature event benefiting the American Cancer Society will be April 26 at the Tampa Port Authority's Cruise Terminal No. 3. It features food, drinks, gaming tables, a silent auction and a live auction.
Gloria Giunta, a South Tampa resident, founded the event 11 years ago.
The 2008 event chairwoman is Jeanne Marget; honorary co-chairmen are Pam and Les Muma.
Jeanne and Mike Marget moved to Tampa two years ago from Chicago. They live in a condominium in the Channel District, and he is the chief financial officer for the Holland & Knight law firm.
Jeanne Marget said she agreed to chair the committee 'because it's a volunteer-driven organization. It's fun to plan, but it really is about the cause,' Mike Marget said of his wife's involvement: 'She's having a great time. We are thrilled to be in the Tampa community and to make a contribution.'
American Cancer Society board chairman Curtis Stokes of Tampa Palms also attended the Sept. 27 planning meeting.
'Anytime you can be involved in an organization that gives so much back to research is great,' Stokes said.
Other attendees included Davis Islands resident Marc Dahl of Modi-5, who does the artwork for the event, and auction co-chairwomen Cathy Curry of Carrollwood and Lisa Heimes of Seminole Heights.
This year's theme is 'Stampede.' Tickets will be limited to 650 guests. The goal is to raise at least $550,000 from the party.
Giunta said one reason the event is popular is that attendees are encouraged to wear Western-style clothes, boots and cowboy hats.
'Anytime a man doesn't have to wear a tuxedo, he's there,' Giunta said.
