King Students Win Awards

Tampa - Tampa - Nineteen Hillsborough County public school students have been named National Achievement Scholarship semifinalists.

Leading the way was King High School, with five National Achievement semifinalists, the most of any school in the state. King High School had more National Achievement semifinalists than all Pinellas County schools combined. Hillsborough High School had three semifinalists. Freedom and Gaither high schools had two each.

The designation as a National Achievement semifinalist is based on the students' performance on the 2006 Preliminary SAT-National Merit Scholar qualifying test. The students now will remain in the competition for more than $2.5 million in college scholarships.

The semifinalists from King High are Dudley Hall, Jenika Shannon, Kyle Simmons, Courtney Smith and Kheva Stenson.

King's journalism students competed against students from seven counties in the Florida Scholastic Press Association high school competition. Several students placed at the event. The awards were:

*First place Yearbook Team On-The-Spot: Haley Scott, Francesca Hill, Christine Kegel and Emily Adams.
*First place Yearbook Theme Development On-The-Spot: Mandy Dorsett.
First place Advertising Design On-The-Spot: Danwei Wu.
*First place Digital Design On-The-Spot: Steven Romeo, Shreya Murthy, Stephen Chen and Lauren Atkins.
*First place Editorial Writing On-The-Spot: Neil Manimala.
*First place News Writing: Sonia Joseph.
*Second place Ad Design Carry-In Xi Yu.
*Second place Newspaper Team On-The-Spot: Xi Yu, Sanjula Jain, Charles Chu and Sherry Chao.
*Third place Feature Writing On-The-Spot: Christina Chen.
*Third place News Writing On-The-Spot: Subbu Pichappan.
*Third place Feature Center spread Carry-In: Shreya Murthy.
*Third place Editorial Writing On-The-Spot: Rowena Li.
