Fire Safety Fair Set For Oct. 20

NEW TAMPA - The New Tampa Junior Woman's Club will hold its fifth annual Fire Safety and Awareness Day from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 20 at Tampa Fire Rescue Station No. 12.

The event includes truck and police dog demonstrations, an arts and crafts table, exhibits by the Hillsborough County Health Department, Florida Blood Services and the New Tampa Family YMCA, and snacks.

Open to the public at no charge, the event promotes fire safety and provides information to children about fire, water and home safety.

The fire station is at 18902 Green Pine Lane, just off Cross Creek Boulevard.

The Junior Woman's Club also has chosen Nathaniel's Hope Buddy Break as its primary charity for the 11th annual Night of 5000 gala.

The program is designed to give caregivers of children with special needs a break from their ongoing caregiving responsibilities for three hours on weekends. The program provides care for ages 2 to 16 and for their siblings from ages 4 through fifth grade.

Night of 5000 will be April 19 at the Saddlebrook Resort in Wesley Chapel. The theme is 'An Evening in Monte Carlo.'

Church Plans Octoberfest

TEMPLE TERRACE - Christ Our Redeemer Lutheran Church will hold an Oktoberfest from 2 to 6 p.m. Oct. 20 at the church, 304 Druid Hills Road.

The event will feature a craft fair, games, face painting, live music and German food.

Event To Benefit Medical Clinic

PEBBLE CREEK - The University of South Florida Association of Physical Therapy Students will sponsor a first-time golf tournament Friday at Pebble Creek Golf Club, 10550 Regents Park Drive.

The event will benefit the BRIDGE Healthcare Clinic, which assists patients in the University Area without insurance.

Registration is at noon, and a shotgun start is at 1 p.m. An awards dinner follows play.

Chaplain Honored By Governor

TEMPLE TERRACE - Chaplain David E. Lefavor of the James A. Haley VA Medical Center has been recognized with the Governor's Points of Light Award.

The presentation was made to the Temple Terrace resident at a reception Monday at Lupton's.

Lefavor helped organize Operation Helping Hand for families traveling from across the Tampa Bay area to visit their loved ones in the medical center. He also organized Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners for the families.

Plant Societies Meet Next Week

SEMINOLE HEIGHTS - Two plant societies will have meetings next week at the Seminole Garden Center, 5800 N. Central Ave. The meetings, which are open to the public free charge, are:

•The Tampa Bay Orchid Society. Ken Roberts, a society judge, will speak about 'Becoming an American Orchid Society Judge' at 7 p.m. Thursday.

•The Tampa African Violet Society. Rita Fitzsimmons will speak about 'African Violet Pests' and present a slide show at 10 a.m. Friday.

Health Awareness Program Planned

UNIVERSITY AREA - The Hillsborough County Health Department will host the second For Women Only Expo: A Day of Pampering from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 20 at the University Area Community Center, 14013 N. 22nd St.

The program offers free health screenings for cholesterol, blood pressure and glucose, as well as pap and mammography tests for women in need of health care. There will also be workshops and seminars to educate women about breast self-exams, cancer prevention and healthy lifestyles. The event also will include lunch, massages and a fashion show.

The event is free, but registration is required by calling (813) 307-8015, Ext. 3502. Women who want pap and mammography tests are required to meet qualifications and must schedule an appointment. The first 150 women to register will receive a gift.

The Tampa Tribune is among the expo sponsors.

Lunch Features EPC Director

YBOR CITY - Rick Garrity, director of the Environmental Protection Commission, will speak about wetlands at a luncheon sponsored by the League of Women Voters.

The event will be at noon Wednesday at the Lions Eye Institute, 1410 N. 21st St.

Activities To Benefit The Spring

SOUTH TAMPA - Two events next week focus on The Spring, which assists victims of domestic violence. They are:

•The Spring Daytime Auxiliary, which will meet noon Monday at The Spring Vintage Boutique, 3418 Swann Ave.

The boutique, which opened in 2005, raises funds for The Spring and promotes community awareness. Members of the auxiliary will model clothes, and lunch will be served.

•The 17th annual Gift of Peace Breakfast, which is Wednesday at the Hyatt Regency, Two Tampa City Center.

Registration is at 7 a.m., and the program begins at 7:30 a.m. The cost is $50 per person. For reservations, call (813) 247-5433.

13 Ugly Men Are Honored

SOUTH TAMPA - Voices for Children will recognize The 13 Ugly Men for the group's dedication and devotion to children with the annual Champion for Children award.

The presentation will be part of a party at 7 p.m. Friday at the Renaissance Tampa Hotel International Plaza, 4200 Jim Walter Blvd. The party theme is 13-Card Stud.

The 13 Ugly Men has 25 members who plan parties with charities to benefit from their work.

Voices for Children supports the Guardian ad Litem program to advocate for children who are in the family court system but have no one to speak on their behalf. Lisa Semeyn is the executive director.

The 13 Ugly Men group will hold its 10th annual Freakshow at 8 p.m. Oct. 26 at Club Underground, 802 E. Whiting St.

Costumes are required for the party, which benefits A Gift for Adoption.
