THONOTOSASSA - It's a happening that's meant to be a safe alternative to the sometimes-horrid antics of Halloween hoodwinkers.
However, organizers say the 15th annual Haunted Woods event at Hillsborough River State Park will be thrilling enough to satisfy the curiosity of most kids and their families.
Older children and their parents will be treated to a 30-minute haunted woods trail walk while their younger siblings participate in coloring contests.
In addition to the woods walk, on Saturday night guests can add to it a 40-minute tram ride that meanders throughout the park.
'Visitors are encouraged to decorate their campsites with a fall festive look,' said Patrick Potts, a parks services specialist with the Florida Division of Recreation & Parks and spokesperson for the event.
'Over the past years, this activity has grown into a main attraction.'
Costume contests will be held both nights in which children in various age categories will be judged according to the scariest and funniest outfits. Winners are to receive goodie bags, compliments of the Hillsborough River State Park Preservation Society, sponsor of the event.
A moonwalk, games and refreshments will be available for a nominal fee, Potts said.
