Published: October 24, 2007

THONOTOSASSA - Although the Hillsborough River watershed encompasses more than 675 square miles in three counties and is the primary source of drinking water for Tampa, many give it little thought.

A River Runs Through It, an event set for Saturday, is meant to bring people closer to the river and make them more aware of its importance.

A River Runs Through It is a nature-based day of activities to help people learn more about the waterway. It is the culmination of Hillsborough River Watershed Awareness Week, Oct. 20 through Saturday.

The event, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Hillsborough River State Park, will be a day of presentations, workshops and educational displays highlighting the river's recreational opportunities.

It also will include exhibits on Florida-friendly landscaping, environmental workshops and music by local performers, said Kim Tennille, the park manager. 'We hope visitors go away with a better understanding of what they can do to care for the environment and, especially, the river,' Tennille said.
