USF CAMPUS - New members of the University of South Florida Women's Club were welcomed with a tea this week at the Sam & Martha Gibbons Alumni Center.
'We are having this so you can meet the returning members,' club President Carol Jones, a Tampa Palms resident, told about 50 guests.
Monday's event also allowed members to join a number of special groups, including people interested in books, theater and dining.
Jones said the 50-year-old club has more than 100 members and that one of its goals is to grow by bringing in new members who have enthusiasm and energy.
'We want the legacy of the women's club to continue,' she said. 'We really want to get the membership involved in what we are doing.'
Jones, a real estate agent who is a retired high school administrator, said the club is making changes recommended by a committee last year. Those include printing the yearbook earlier, offering a variety of meeting times, holding board meetings in the summer and electing officers for two-year terms.
'Change happens whether we like it; we need to take charge of that change,' Jones said.
The club is open to all interested in assisting the university. Some members, such as Jones, are spouses of faculty members. Some are retired staff members; others are simply friends and supporters of the university.
The club's next meeting will be a luncheon Oct. 15 at USF, at which eight recipients of the Grace Allen Scholarships, funded by the club, will be introduced. Grace Allen, the wife of John Allen, USF's first president, founded the club. USF President Judy Genshaft is expected to attend the luncheon.
