TAMPA PALMS - More than 40 members and potential members of the Tampa Palms Women's Club gathered recently for a membership brunch.
The Sept. 20 event was at the Westover home of Elvea Kelly. Club President Marion Brookover welcomed the guests, who brought casseroles, salads, breads and desserts to the event. A punch bowl was filled with mimosa.
Brookover, whose term will end in January, said members are getting ready for the club's biggest fundraiser of the year, its Arts & Crafts Under the Palms show, set for Oct. 19 and 20 at City Plaza at Tampa Palms.
'That's where we make all of our money for our charities,' Brookover said.
The club meets at 10 a.m. the first Thursday of each month at the Compton Park clubhouse, 16101 Compton Drive. It is open to residents of Tampa Palms Areas 1, 2, 3, 4. For information about the organization, call Audrey Bartley at (813) 971-3294.
New Tampa Junior Takes Top Honor
NEW TAMPA - Jolie Frankfurth of the New Tampa Junior Woman's Club was awarded the Jennie June Medal of Honor at the state meeting of the Junior Woman's Clubs.
The award is given to a member for her outstanding commitment to her club, community and family.
As the nominee representing Florida, she will compete at the Southern regional level against nominees from Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi and South Carolina.
Frankfurth is a charter member of the 10-year-old New Tampa group and a past president of the organization. She is on the state board as the vice director of juniors.
A resident of Tampa since 1981, she is vice president of school support for the Hunter's Green Elementary PTA, is a member of the Parent Resource Association at Terrace Community Middle School, an adjunct professor at Hillsborough Community College and is a religious educator at St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church.
She and her husband, Thomas, have been married for 15 years and have two children.
USF Groups Plan Community Luncheon
DOWNTOWN TAMPA - The Tampa chapter of the University of South Florida Alumni Association, the Black Alumni Society and the Engineering Society will sponsor the annual Tampa Community Luncheon.
The public event is Tuesday at the Hyatt Regency Tampa, 211 N. Tampa St. Registration is at 11:30 a.m., with the lunch and program from noon to 1:15 p.m.
USF President Judy Genshaft will give an update about the university. Brendan McLaughlin of WFTS-TV will moderate a panel with Chad Dickey, assistant professor in the college of medicine; Ken Hardin, president and chief executive officer of Janus Research; Rob Higgins, executive director of the Tampa Bay Sports Commission; and Margaret Smith, project management engineer for the Florida Department of Transportation.

Golf Tournaments Planned To Raise Cash
NEW TAMPA - Two fundraising golf tournaments are seeking players. They are:
•The 4-H Foundation Golf Tournament, Oct. 13 at Pebble Creek Golf Club, 10550 Regents Park Drive.
The event begins at 9 a.m. It benefits the leadership and citizenship program offered by Hillsborough County 4-H. More than 20,000 youths in the county participate in 4-H.

•The first Angel of Hope Memorial Garden Tampa Bay Charity Golf Tournament, set for Nov. 5 at the Temple Terrace Golf & Country Club, 200 Inverness Ave.
The proceeds will be used toward a memorial garden for people who have lost children.
The registration fee is $200 per person or $750 for a foursome. It includes a lunch and an awards dinner.

Vendors Sought For Shop 'N' Social
TEMPLE TERRACE - The Temple Terrace Junior Woman's Club is seeking vendors for its fifth annual Junior Shop 'N' Social.
The event is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 13 at the Lightfoot Recreation Center, 10901 N. 56th St.

Events Planned As Fundraisers
TAMPA - Many nonprofits have fall events as fundraisers. Some planned are:
The New Tampa Family YMCA's Passport to Paradise, set for 6 p.m. today at the YMCA, 16221 Compton Drive.
The event, which has the theme 'Australia,' includes dinner, cocktails and live entertainment. Tickets are $100 per person. Proceeds benefit the organization's scholarship fund.

The ninth annual Sports, Leisure and Entertainment Gala, sponsored by the Gulf Ridge Council of Boy Scouts of America.
The event, called the Learning for Life Oktoberfest Gala, will be 7 p.m. Friday at Stetson University, 1700 N. Tampa St. It includes a German dinner, German beer, wine tasting, door prizes, live entertainment and a live and a silent auction.

•The University of South Florida's Women in Leadership & Philanthropy's second Scholarship Luncheon will be noon Monday at the Hyatt Regency Tampa, 211 N. Tampa St.
Television journalist Campbell Brown will be the speaker; Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio will be a featured guest; and WFLA, News Channel 8, anchor Gayle Sierens will serve as mistress of ceremonies.
Brown will meet with students at a special round-table session sponsored and moderated by founding member Erika Wallace prior to the luncheon. Brown also will take part in a VIP reception sponsored by The Athena Society after the luncheon.
Kay E. Glasser, co-founder of Glasser-Schoenbaum Human Services of Sarasota, will be honored at the luncheon with the first WLP Award in recognition of her leadership and philanthropic commitment to empowering and improving the quality of life for women and families in the Tampa Bay and global communities.

The Hadassah Night of 1,000 Dishes to benefit The Children's Home and local schools.
The event, from 5 to 9 p.m. Oct. 7 at the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center, will feature food and wine from Tampa area establishments. It also will include live entertainment, a silent auction and a gallery of 1,000 dishes decorated by children.
Celebrity plates decorated by Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio, talk show host Jon Stewart, actress Lily Tomlin and Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker Derrick Brooks will be featured.
Tickets are $75 per person or $125 per patron, which includes entrance at 4:30 p.m. and a reception. For details, call (813) 230-8163.
Elia To Speak At Rotary Meeting
TAMPA PALMS - Hillsborough County School District Superintendent MaryEllen Elia will speak at Friday's meeting of the Rotary Club of New Tampa.
Elia will speak about school budgets and student enrollment at the 7 a.m. meeting at Tampa Palms Golf & Country Club, 5811 Tampa Palms Blvd.
