Frog Listening Network Featured

THONOTOSASSA - The Tampa Audubon Society will have a presentation about the Frog Listening Network at its Aug. 29 meeting.

The free event for members and guests will be at 7:30 p.m. at Flatwoods Park, 14302 Morris Bridge Road.

The Frog Listening Network helps people learn the songs and sounds of frogs and toads. It also focuses on their significance to the well-being of wetlands.

Free Transportation To Vote Offered

TEMPLE TERRACE - The Temple Terrace Woman's Club will provide free transportation to the Temple Terrace Public Library for early voting Friday for anyone who does not have transportation.

Club members will drive voters to the library and return them to their homes. Reservations are required by noon Thursday. For reservations, call (813) 988-6794.

Car Wash Benefits Child Abuse Council ARBOR GREENE - The Smart Center of Tampa will host professional car washes at the Lennar Welcome Home Center in Arbor Greene, 10144 Arbor Run Drive, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday.

Any donation amount will be accepted, with all donations earmarked for the Child Abuse Council. The goal is $5,000 from five car washes held across the Tampa Bay area between Aug. 9 and Sunday.

New Group Supports Red Cross

DOWNTOWN TAMPA - The American Red Cross of Tampa Bay's recently formed young professionals group, Empowered, will introduce its newly elected board of directors at a social.

The event, featuring complimentary appetizers and a cash bar, will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Malio's Prime Steakhouse, 400 N. Ashley Drive.

The purpose of Empowered is to support and enhance the mission of the American Red Cross through voluntary service, fundraising and social networking. It is geared toward people in their 20s and 30s and open to all who are interested in participating in the organization. Door prize drawings will be part of today's event.

Event Raises Money For Animal Rescue

YBOR CITY - A fundraiser that benefits St. Francis Society Animal Rescue is set for 6 to 10 a.m. Aug. 28 at the Don Vicente de Ybor Historic Inn, 1915 Avenida Republica de Cuba.

Cynthia Smoot of WTVT-TV, Channel 13, will be the mistress of ceremonies. The event includes a silent auction, a dog fashion show, music and food. A signature drink will be provided, and a cash bar will be available.

Orchid Society Meets Thursday

SEMINOLE HEIGHTS - Martin Motes, an author who is president of Motes Orchids, will speak at Thursday's meeting of the Tampa Bay Orchid Society.

The free event, open to members and guests, will be at 7:30 p.m. at Seminole Heights United Methodist Church, 6111 Central Ave. The doors open at 7 p.m.

Motes, who will speak about "Temperature-Tolerant Vanda Hybrids," will have plants for sale.

Auction Is Part Of Gourmet Feastival

DOWNTOWN TAMPA - The 17th annual Gourmet Feastival & Silent Auction will feature more than 320 restaurants and caterers offering food and drink samples.

The event, from 6 to 9 p.m. Aug. 28 at the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center, 1010 N. MacInnes Place, also will include more than 150 items up for bid. They include travel and leisure packages, gift baskets and tickets to sporting events.

The event will be in the Carol Morsani Hall and the Louise Lykes Ferguson Hall. A VIP reception is planned for the Inner Circle on the second floor of the Carol Morsani Hall.

The fundraiser provides money for The Centre for Women, a nonprofit organization serving more than 4,000 women, girls, families and senior citizens each year.

Tickets are $50 if purchased by 5 p.m. Aug. 27 and $60 thereafter. All attendees must be at least 21 years old. For tickets, visit www.gourmetfeastival.org or call (813) 251-8437.

Local Foundations Present Grants

TAMPA - The DeBartolo Family Foundation recently presented $70,000 in grants through its community funding program, which was established in 2001 to assist local organizations.

The recipients include Big Cat Rescue, the Family Justice Center of Hillsborough County, the Franciscan Friars, the Hillsborough Education Foundation, the Junior League of Tampa, the Life Enrichment Center, Mort Elementary School Early Exceptional Learning Program, Ovacome of Tampa Bay Foundation, Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center, Tampa Marine Institute and Very Special Arts of Florida.

In addition, the Glazer Family Foundation kicked off its 2008 Backpack It Back to School program at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers training camp.

Fourteen community groups are distributing 1,500 backpacks to children in need. The organizations include the Corporation to Develop Communities, Tampa Heights Junior Civic Association, Project Link, the NFL/Youth Education Town Centers of Tampa Bay and Abe Brown Ministries.

Wellness Program Topic At Rotary

TAMPA PALMS - Sigrid Tidmore, president of Healthy Together, Tampa Bay, and Jeff Knott, co-chairman of the organization, will speak at Friday's meeting of the Rotary Club of New Tampa.

They will talk about their group's wellness program at the 7 a.m. meeting at the Tampa Palms Golf & Country Club, 5811 Tampa Palms Blvd.

The club is for professional and business leaders who live, work or are retired in the New Tampa area.
