TAMPA PALMS - The Tampa City Council has approved the contract with Team Pain to build a skate park at the New Tampa Recreation Center.
The $695,252 contract is nearly 40 percent higher than the anticipated $500,000 budget, but the city was able to pay for the overage by shifting community investment tax money that was left over from another parks project: the renovations at Cyrus Greene pool.
Project manager Brad Suder said the contract exceeds the original budget because it also includes lighting and fencing for one of the ball fields at the New Tampa Community Park. Construction is scheduled to start in late September. The skate park at 17302 Commerce Park Blvd. should be ready to open in early 2009.
The 15,000-square-foot skate park is designed to appeal to skaters of all skill levels. It has a street course - with pyramids, stairs, curbs and handrails - a bowl with two depths, and a series of quarter-pipe turns that allow skaters to "flow" from one element to the next.
