Osher Institute To Showcase Science, Shakespeare Classes

NORTH TAMPA - The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of South Florida will host an open house to showcase its upcoming programs and study groups.

The free event begins with refreshments and social time 9:30 a.m. Sept. 11 at the Dr. Blaise F. Alfano Conference and Banquet Center, 11606 McKinley Drive. The presentation begins at 10 a.m.

The institute is a fee-based membership organization for active older adults. It focuses on programs in the humanities and computer training. Courses planned include Life Challenges, Life Solutions; Keeping Things Whole: Readings in Environmental Science; Brush Up Your Shakespeare; Internet: Tips, Tricks and Traps; and Internet Genealogy. Courses are offered at numerous locations, including the university, University Village, John Knox Village and Hunter's Green Golf & Country Club.

Krewe To Host Benefit For Ailing Member

TAMPA - The Bonney-Read Krewe will sponsor Escape to the Tropics to assist a founding krewe member who has been devastated financially by cancer.

The event, featuring music by the Moneypenny Band, food, games and an auction, will be 7 p.m. Sept. 6 at the Zendah Grotto, 4202 W. Ohio St.

Proceeds will assist Carolyn Faulkner, who is receiving treatment at the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute.

Moffitt Program Topic At Rotary Meeting

TAMPA PALMS - Paul B. Jacobsen, H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute program leader in psychosocial and palliative care programs, health outcomes and behavior programs, will speak at Friday's meeting of the Rotary Club of New Tampa.

Jacobsen will talk about the Moffitt Survivorship Clinic at the 7 a.m. meeting at the Tampa Palms Golf & Country Club, 5811 Tampa Palms Blvd.

The club is for professional and business leaders who live, work or are retired in the New Tampa area.

Shoe Carnival Joins Footwear Drive

UNIVERSITY AREA - Soles4Souls, the international charity dedicated to providing free footwear to those in need, will partner with Shoe Carnival for a fundraising and shoe trade-in program.

For a $2 donation, one of the 300 million children around the world without shoes will receive his or her first pair of shoes. Also, customers can bring in a pair of gently worn shoes to any participating Shoe Carnival store and receive a $5 coupon. All the footwear collected during the event, from Wednesday through Sept. 24, will go to Soles4Souls.

Juniors Plan Anniversary Cookbook

TEMPLE TERRACE - Temple Terrace Junior Woman's Club members are taking orders for their newest fundraiser, The 50th Anniversary Cookbook.

The money raised will benefit local charities.
