Published: December 17, 2008

TAMPA PALMS - Eight charities received a total of $6,000 in donations recently from the Tampa Palms Women's Club.

The money was raised by club members at the Arts & Crafts Under the Palms show in October. It was presented at the group's holiday covered-dish luncheon Dec. 4 at Compton Park.

Charlotte Hogue, the club's charities chairwoman, coordinated the check presentation to the groups' representatives, who had an opportunity to tell about their programs.

The groups receiving checks were Kids & Canines, Everyday Blessings, Hillsborough House of Hope, OASIS (Outreach Assisting Students In Schools) Network, Rich House, PACE Center for Girls, God's Pedal Power and Wheels of Success. The club also provided gifts for students in need at Tampa Palms and Lawton Chiles elementary schools.

Mike Olson of God's Pedal Power, which operates in the University Area, said the group was formed to provide bicycles to children. But its mission expanded to also help.

"We have been inundated with so many people in need of bicycles to just get to a job. They can't afford a car anymore or the insurance," he said.

Hillsborough House of Hope, which helps women coming out of incarceration, was the only first-time recipient.

Linda Walker, the agency's program manager, accepted the money and said the organization is appreciative of the money and a recent donation of clothes from club members.

"The ladies went through those bags like they were at the mall," she told them.

Tampa Palms Elementary principal Kimberly Keenan and Chiles principal Kim Peitch accepted the gifts.

Peitch said the schools have a number of children who need assistance. "Children don't understand a recession. It is Christmas."

The club also had its holiday party at the Tampa Palms Golf & Country Club on Dec. 7.

The not-for-profit club meets at 10 a.m. the first Thursday monthly (except July and August) at Compton Park. Members also have outings such as one Feb. 19 to Tampa Bay Downs horse track. Another event is the installation of new officers and a luncheon at 11 a.m. Jan. 22 at Tampa Palms Golf & Country Club.
