TAMPA - Baseball Hall of Fame member Robin Roberts, a Temple Terrace resident, was honored recently for his work with the Gold Shield Foundation.
The foundation, founded by New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner, furnishes immediate financial assistance and guarantees a college education to spouses and dependent children of law enforcement officers and firefighters killed in the line of duty.
Roberts, who played for the Philadelphia Phillies, is a founding member of the organization.
He was recognized for his continuing service at the organization's 27th annual meeting and luncheon Dec. 10 at A La Carte Pavilion.
Former baseball player Tino Martinez, now the special assistant to the general manager of the Yankees, was the speaker for the event, which drew several hundred law enforcement officials, firefighters and supporters.
Tom Shannon was re-elected president of the organization. Joe Voskerichian is the executive director.
Nonprofit Receives Lazydays Grant
UNIVERSITY AREA - Its All About Kids has received a $3,000 grant award from the Lazydays foundation to expand its work in the University Area.
It's All About Kids is a nonprofit organization serving children in grades K-12. Founded in 2001, the organization conducts various enrichment programs for children and their families that include etiquette and manners courses, after-school tutoring, mentoring and reading programs, and a literacy campaign called Buzz Into Books, which promotes reading and staying in school. The programs are designed to teach essential skills and good social habits to help children succeed.
Wanda DeLaRosa, the organization's executive director, said a grant award ceremony will be held soon.

Florida Aquarium Hosts Aqua Eve Celebration
CHANNEL DISTRICT - The Florida Aquarium will host Aqua Eve, a New Year's celebration, with entertainment; food, beer and wine, and a champagne toast.
The fundraiser for the aquarium will be from 9 p.m. Dec. 31 to 1 a.m. Jan. 1.The site also provides a view for a fireworks display over the channel at midnight.

Outback Officer Appointed To Board
Paul Avery of Tampa has been appointed to the MDA Venture Philanthropy's first board of directors.
The philanthropy is a new initiative of the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
The philanthropy will focus on the discovery and commercialization of treatments for neuromuscular diseases. The board's first meeting was Dec. 4 in New York City.
Avery has been an MDA national vice president, a volunteer position, since 2005. He is chief operating officer of OSI Restaurant Partners, which operates Outback Steakhouse.
