NEW TAMPA – Parent volunteers rolled up their sleeves and served food to more than 100 students and parents ready for an evening of music at Bartels Middle School Dec. 16.

The spaghetti dinner fundraiser, hosted by the school's new music boosters committee, preceded the students' winter music concert in the school auditorium.

More than 300 people attended the annual showcase for seventh- and eighth-graders in the band, orchestra and symphony.

The concert and spaghetti dinner raised more than $700 for the music program, school band director Paul Rauscher said.

Parents formed the boosters group this year to offer financial support to the thriving music program. The group plans to raise money to purchase music, buy new instruments and repair used ones, and cover the cost of transporting students to musical performances, boosters committee spokesman Shawn Ryan said.

Rauscher and orchestra director Melissa Grady said they are thrilled to have an active music boosters club at the school, which opened three years ago.

"Instrument repair is huge," Grady said. "We also need money for field trips and to help buy instruments for children whose parents can't afford them."

Rauscher said the community's love for the arts also contributes to the success of the music program and the support of active parent volunteers.

Seventy seventh- and eighth-graders participate in band, and 58 students perform in the orchestra or symphony, according to the music instructors.

More than 80 sixth-graders are registered to join the music program in January, Rauscher said.

The boosters committee is already making plans to host a miniature golf fundraiser on campus in the spring, Ryan said.
