TEMPLE CREST - Tampa is spending $350,000 to fix a nagging flooding problem on Riverhills Drive at 46th Street.
Stormwater Department Director Chuck Walter said the project, which is under construction, should alleviate the flooding homeowners experience virtually every time it rains. It also has a separate "water quality" component to filter the stormwater before it drains into the Hillsborough River.
"They told us it's a state-of-the-art filtration system and it's only the second of its kind in Tampa," said Terry Neal, a Riverhills resident and president of the Temple Crest Civic Association. "I'm real excited about that. Anything that keeps sediment and trash from getting in the river is a good thing."
The project is one of several drainage improvements slated for north Tampa. The city is seeking bids for a drainage project on Temple Heights Road, just north of Busch Boulevard. The projected budget for those improvements is $240,000.
The department also has asked the Florida Legislature for $1.5 million in additional drainage improvements for the neighborhood between Interstate 275 and 22nd Street.
