Take Heart; There Are Many Options For Valentine's Day

NORTH TAMPA - Looking for something to do for Valentine's Day? There are plenty of activities across the area. They include:

Romancing the Heart Dinner and Dance, benefiting the Pepin Heart Hospital & Dr. Kiran C. Patel Research Institute.

The event is Feb. 14 at the Pepin Hospitality Center, 4121 N. 50th St. It includes cocktails at 6 p.m. and dinner at 7 p.m.

Mike and Elena Azzarelli are the event co-chairmen. The committee includes Joanne Angel, Danika Azzarelli, Miranda Azzarelli, Manuel Barone, Diego Bognolo, Elena Cifuentes, Kimberli Cummings, Deborah Evans, Patricia Garcia, Melanie Jorgensen, Larry King Jr., Charles Lambert, Joann Lau, Andrew Lau, Chris Lau, Marilyn McPhail, Natalie Mealey, Tom Pepin, John Schueler, Tommy Shannon, Brigitte Shaw, MaryBeth Sheridan and Pam Sullins. •Wild at Heart at Lowry Park Zoo. The event, for ages 21 and older, includes a behind-the-scenes tour of the zoo at 1101 W. Sligh Ave., a progressive dinner and open bar.

It is offered from 6 to 9 p.m. Feb. 14 and 16. Reservations are required. The cost is $50 for the public. For reservations, call (813) 935-8552, Ext. 235.

•Valentine's Ball at Swing Centro. The Feb. 14 event at Centro Asturiano, 1913 N. Nebraska Ave., includes music by the 18-piece Ten O'Clock Big Band.

Dance lessons are at 7 p.m., and the dance starts at 8 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to wear red, white or pink. Admission is $12. For details, call (813) 274-4950.

•Valentine's Evening for Married Couples.

The Franciscan Center, 3010 W. Perry Ave., hosts a candlelight dinner and time of reflection, ritual and prayer.

Led by Maureen Connors Flood, Maury Flood and the Rev. Sam Vaccarella, the event is from 6 to 9:30 p.m. Feb. 14.

The fee is $50 per couple. Register by Friday by calling (813) 229-2695.

•For the Love of a Garden, a celebration of Monet's garden, with food, beverages and a live and silent auction.

The event will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Feb. 14 at the Tampa Garden Club, 2629 Bayshore Blvd. Linda and Harry Teasley are the honorary co-chairmen; Rosann Creed and Nootchie Smith are co-chairwomen of the event, which benefits projects of the Federation of Garden Club Circles.

The dress is cocktail attire. Tickets are $50 and available by calling (813) 251-5059.

Women's Club Heading To Races

TAMPA PALMS - Members and guests of the Tampa Palms Women's Club will have a Day at the Races when they have lunch at Tampa Bay Downs on Feb. 21.

The group will leave Compton Park, 16101 Compton Drive, at 10:15 a.m. Tickets are $19. Reservations are required by calling Meg Collins at (813) 558-0174.

The club also will meet 10 a.m. Thursday at Compton Park for a program by Judy Rhodin. Lunch will follow at the Tampa Palms Golf & Country Club.

Florida Landscaping Topic For Meeting

TEMPLE TERRACE - Marina D'Abreau, an environmental horticultural agent, will speak about the nine principles of Florida-Friendly Landscaping at Thursday's meeting of the Friends of Temple Terrace Parks and Recreation Department.

The 7 p.m. meeting, open to the public free of charge, will be at the Temple Terrace United Methodist Church, 5030 E. Busch Blvd.

Women's Group Speaker Focuses On Retirement

HUNTER'S GREEN - Christine Cooper will speak about retirement at the North East Tampa Women in Business's meeting 6 p.m. Feb. 21.

The meeting will be at the Hunter's Green Golf & Country Club, 18101 Longwater Run Drive. Cooper will focus on "Baby Boomers: How To Change 'I Want To Retire' to 'I Can Retire.' "

The dinner meeting costs $25 for guests if registered by Feb. 15. After that, the fee is $28 for guests.

USF Alumni Group Plans Mixer

CHANNEL DISTRICT - The Tampa chapter of the University of South Florida Alumni Association will hold the Signing Day Mixer from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Splitsville, 615 Channelside Drive.

Garden Club Plans Program On Begonias

SEMINOLE HEIGHTS - Master gardener Aileen Hart will present a program on begonias at the Feb. 13 meeting of the North Tampa Garden Club.

Subject Of 'Rudy' To Speak Feb. 15

DOWNTOWN TAMPA - Rudy Ruettiger, the subject of the film "Rudy," will speak Feb. 15 about building better relationships, never underestimating the power of a dream and making choices.

Ruettiger, who was on the Notre Dame football team and carried off the field after his only on-field appearance, will speak at The Relationship Conference. It will be from 9 a.m. to noon at the Hyatt Regency, 211 N. Tampa St.

Chris Simms of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will introduce Ruettiger. The event is open to the public. Tickets are $30 and available at www.rudy intampa.com.

Author To Speak At Rotary Club

TAMPA PALMS - Historian and author Burton Hersh will speak at Friday's meeting of the Rotary Club of New Tampa.
