Verizon Channels Book Donations To Literacy Program

UNIVERSITY AREA - Almost 300 books were donated recently to the Department of Adult and Community Education's Family Literacy Program by Verizon employees.

The books were delivered Jan. 31 to a classroom at the University Area Community Center, one site of the program sponsored by the Hillsborough County School District.

The books were collected through Verizon's Season's Readings program, an annual drive during the holiday season. They were delivered by Carrol Pirant and Delmalynn Reinke, co-chairs of the Season's Readings committee.

School district personnel accepted the donation, which will be used in the classroom for Parent and Child Together activities. Some also will be given to families in the preschool program.

"The parent is the first teacher of the children," said Iowana Whitman-Tims, a district resource teacher in the literacy program.

Business Group Plans Breakfast

UNIVERSITY AREA - The University Area Business Association will hold a breakfast for members and potential members from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Feb. 20 at University Village, 12401 N. 22{+n}{+d} St.

The group offers special events, marketing opportunities and guest speakers.

Golf Tournaments Are In New Tampa

NEW TAMPA - Golf tournaments at New Tampa courses will benefit various programs.

They include:

•The third annual Legs Golf Tournament, set for Feb. 25 at the Tampa Palms Golf & Country Club, 5811 Tampa Palms Blvd. Registration is at 12:30 p.m.; a shotgun start is at 2 p.m. State Sen. Victor Crist, R-Tampa, and Mark Levin, chairman of the University of South Florida Alumni Council of 100, are honorary co-chairmen of the event, which is sponsored by the USF Alumni Association.

The $250-per-person entry fee includes lunch, awards dinner, balls and a golf gift. For details, call (813) 974-2100.

•The Kiwanis Club of New Tampa's fourth annual golf tournament, which is March 3 at the Tampa Palms Golf & Country Club, 5811 Tampa Palms Blvd.

The event benefits Kiwanis-sponsored programs such as Terrific Kids programs at local elementary schools, Key Clubs at Wharton and Freedom and Academy at the Lakes high schools, and the Circle K Club at the University of Tampa.

Individual registration is $125, and foursomes are $500. The fee includes golf, golf card, goody bag, breakfast and awards luncheon. Registration is at 7 a.m., and the shotgun start is at 9 a.m.

The ninth annual Centre for Women Golf Classic, set for March 10 at Hunter's Green Country Club, 18101 Longwater Run Drive.

The Seminole Tribe of Florida is presenting the event, which will include a silent auction and awards dinner.

Chamber Plans Networking Luncheon

TEMPLE TERRACE - The Greater Temple Terrace Chamber of Commerce will hold a networking luncheon at 11:45 a.m. Feb. 20 at Carrabba's Italian Grill, 5515 E. Fowler Ave. Tickets are $15, and reservations are needed by noon Friday by calling (813) 989-7004.

The chamber also will hold the Lunch & Learn Chamber Workshop from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday at the University of Phoenix, 100 Tampa Oaks Blvd.

A box lunch from Lenny's Sub Shop will be served with the fee of $10 per person.

Yard Sale Benefits King High Lionettes

TEMPLE TERRACE - The King High School Lionettes will hold their fourth annual yard sale from 7 a.m. to noon Feb. 16 at the Temple Terrace Presbyterian Church, 420 Bullard Parkway.

Dish Gardens Topic For African Violet Group

SEMINOLE HEIGHTS - Mina Menish will present a program on "Designing Dish Gardens" at Friday's meeting of the Tampa African Violet Society.

AIDS Epidemic Topic At Kiwanis

TAMPA PALMS - John and Debra Daly will speak about the AIDS epidemic in Africa at Wednesday's meeting of the Kiwanis Club of New Tampa.

He is a professor of public administration at the University of South Florida and consults with several African governments on their response to the AIDS epidemic. He and his wife have traveled extensively in Africa.

Children's Board Rep To Speak At Rotary

TAMPA PALMS - Peter Gorski of the Children's Board of Hillsborough County will speak at Friday's meeting of the Rotary Club of New Tampa.

Gorski, the director of program impact and innovation, will talk about "Building a Healthy Community for Children and Families" at 7 a.m. at the Tampa Palms Golf & Country Club, 5811 Tampa Palms Blvd.
