TEMPLE TERRACE - USF Jazz Ensemble I will perform during An Afternoon of Great Jazz on Sunday at Masque Community Theatre.
Directed by Jack Wilkins, a University of South Florida College of Visual and Performing Arts associate professor, the program will highlight the work of some well-known artists of the big band era, including Count Basie, Buddy Rich and Duke Ellington.
The 17-piece jazz ensemble has "our finest school of music graduate and undergraduate students," Wilkins said, adding that the group also will play contemporary pieces and vocal pieces featuring singer Elizabeth Nelson.
Also performing will be the USF Jazztet, a smaller jazz combo that plans to play works by Miles Davis, Horace Siler and Art Blakey.
"It should be a fun afternoon of jazz, and we're looking forward to it," Wilkins said.
Mayor Joe Affronti hopes the concert will set a precedent for similar shows in downtown Temple Terrace.
"This will show the kinds of performances we can have at the new arts center that's going to be part of our redevelopment project," Affronti said. "This might be the first of many events of this kind that we can bring to this community."
