Condo Owners To Lose Addresses

Published: January 16, 2008

NEW TAMPA - North Oaks condominium owners will lose their Bruce B. Downs Boulevard addresses March 28.

Hillsborough County's E-911 office has notified condo owners that it would proceed with "readdressing" the complex.

"We hammered things back and forth for a while and, eventually, we came to a compromise," project manager Julio Guzman said.

Every unit at North Oaks has an address of 14550 Bruce B. Downs Blvd. Over the years, the North Oaks condo board has numbered the buildings and posted a map of the complex at the entrance. County officials said the changes are necessary to reduce delays in responding to 911 calls.

The entrance road will be renamed Norwood Oaks Drive. Four interior roads will get new names, too. The county will erect street signs in the complex, and the condo association will be required to post new signs on the buildings.

Guzman said the department would send courtesy notices to utility companies regarding the new addresses. Residents are responsible for getting new driver's licenses and notifying their banks and other affected businesses.

"They have a year to use their old checks and stationery," Guzman said. "The U.S. Postal Service will deliver mail to new and old address until March 27, 2009."

Several residents vehemently opposed the decision. Casey Ebsary sought help from county commissioners and from the county attorney's office.

"There's nothing in the statute that allows them to do this," he said.
