CORY LAKE ISLES - The Cory Lake Isles Community Development District's governing board extended the application period for its vacant seat to be more inclusive to residents interested in serving.

But when the developer-controlled board convened last week1/16, it refused to discuss making the appointment. District manager John Daugirda said he was told not to put the item on the board's January agenda.

Four Cory Lake Isles residents have applied for the seat left open when Cory Thomason resigned in October. Two of the applicants are suing the property owners association for access to its financial records. Another is a vocal critic of the board. The fourth applicant is a retiree who said he has a background in real estate.

Board supervisors initially said they would appoint a successor in November. They voted to delay the appointment until January to ensure that residents would have more time to apply.

Suzanne Manzi, who was appointed as a supervisor in spring 2007, pushed for the January vote, saying she wanted more time to publicize the position. When asked about the decision to delay the vote indefinitely, Manzi pursed her lips and shook her head from side to side. Chairman Gene Thomason gave no indication that the board would fill the vacancy before his seat comes up for election in November. The remaining board members unanimously voted against a proposal by homeowner Curtis Perry to require that all vacancies be filled within 90 days.

Manzi and board member Roger Brown also are up for election in November. Anyone interested in filing for office may qualify by petition no later than May 19. The county's official qualifying week begins June 16.
