Rotary Clubs Team For Pig Roast

NEW TAMPA - The Rotary Club of New Tampa and New Tampa Noon Rotary will partner to sponsor the fifth annual New Tampa Pig Roast to benefit local charities.

The event, open to the public, will be 2 to 5 p.m. Feb. 24 on the grounds of St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church, 9724 Cross Creek Blvd.

Mike Wallace is chairman of the event, which last year raised more than $12,000. It was previously a Rotary Club of New Tampa event but expanded to both clubs and moved to the new location.

The event will benefit the Mort Manatee Market, a project of the Rotary Club of New Tampa, and the Outreach Assisting Students in Schools Network, a charity that receives support from the Noon Rotary.

The event will feature four teams roasting whole pigs overnight Feb. 23 to Feb. 24. A winner will be determined by a show of hands and crowd noise when the dinner of pork, chicken, beans, slaw, rolls and beverages is served.

Woman's Club Plans Prayer Breakfast

TEMPLE TERRACE - The Temple Terrace Woman's Club will host the Prayer Breakfast at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Temple Terrace Golf & Country Club, 200 Inverness Ave.

Stephen King, the director of Meals on Wheels, is the speaker; the vocalist is Emily Howell.

Freedom Student Recognized For Service

NEW TAMPA - Jessica Lynn Lane, a Freedom High School student, was named a Cornerstone of the Future award winner at the recent Cornerstone Family Ministries Celebration banquet.

Jessica, the daughter of Mincy Lane and Charles Dixson, is treasurer of Freedom's student advisory committee, secretary of the Student Government Association, a member of the African American Club and co-captain of the Lady Patriots Step Team.

At Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church, she is a worship leader and junior director of the Tiny Tots.

Fundraisers Planned For Early February

DOWNTOWN TAMPA - Several organizations will present fundraising events in early February, some of them first-time offerings. Among the events are:

•The Police Athletic League Pre-Super Bowl Casino Night. The first-time event will be from 7 to 11 p.m. Feb. 2 at the Police Athletic League, 1924 W. Diana St.

•Meet and Greet Cocktail Reception and Book Signing, featuring Jada Collins, Ebony Fashion Show commentator.

The event, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Feb. 5 at Neiman Marcus, 2223 N. West Shore Blvd., also will include Ebony models.

The event benefits Miracles Outreach Community Development Center in Seminole Heights. Tickets are $40 in advance and $50 at the door. For details, call (813) 760-3242.

•Breakfast of Hope, benefiting the Pediatric Cancer Foundation.

Kiersten Allen and Cindy Gruden are the community chairs for the event, set for 7:30 a.m. Feb. 7 at the Marriott Waterside Hotel, 700 S. Florida Ave.

Dan, Kay, Dana and Cody Bertoch are the family chairs. Dana is a cancer survivor.

•Roses in Winter Gala, benefiting the Johnnie B. Byrd Sr. Alzheimer's Center & Research Institute.

Phyllis George, a former Miss America and sports announcer, is the speaker for the fundraiser, set for 6:30 p.m. Feb. 7 in Carol Morsani Hall at the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center, 1010 N. W.C. MacInnes Place.

George, a recent recipient of the Rita Hayworth Alzheimer's Award, will speak about her family and the loss of her mother to Alzheimer's disease.

The event will support research and outreach programs at the new facility.

•The Nightlife Napa Valley Street Fest, a wine- and food-tasting, benefiting the Abilities Foundation.

The event will be from 9 to 11 p.m. Feb. 7 at International Plaza, 2223 N. West Shore Blvd. Restaurants on Bay Street will provide the food, and entertainment is planned.

Tea Lounge Hosts Gifts Of Love

UNIVERSITY AREA - Kaleisia Tea Lounge will host the third annual Gifts of Love, featuring music, swing and salsa dancing, and a live and a silent auction.

The event is from 7 to 10 p.m. Feb. 10 at the lounge, 1441 E. Fletcher Ave. Tickets are $5 in advance and $7 at the door, with proceeds benefiting the Center for Autism & Related Disabilities.

Social Intelligence Topic For Meeting

TAMPA PALMS - Lou Principe, president of the Principe Group, will speak at Friday's meeting of the Rotary Club of New Tampa.

Principe will speak about "Social Intelligence: The Secret to Success" at 7 a.m. at the Tampa Palms Golf & Country Club, 5811 Tampa Palms Blvd.
