UNIVERSITY AREA - Hundreds of friends of Vince McGilvra and customers of Skipper's Smokehouse turned out Sunday to wish McGilvra a happy retirement.
McGilvra co-owns the restaurant and live music venue with Tom White. After 28 years in the business, McGilvra plans to retain his share in Skipper's, but not be involved in daily operations.
The free event featured the Johnny G. Lyon Band. Singers Johnny G. Lyon and Tommy Duncan paid tribute to McGilvra in song.
Lyon and McGilvra met many years ago when Lyon's band was playing at the University of South Florida.
Many local musicians were among the guests at the party.
Skipper's also will host an inshore fishing school, taught by Fred Everson, a local captain, who attended the party.
The event will be from 7 to 10 p.m. Tuesday at Skipper's, 910 Skipper Road.
It will include information on species available, casting, artificial baits and fishing equipment. The cost is $25 per person and includes a copy of Everson's book, "Fish the Flats."
