HUNTER'S GREEN - The New Tampa Community Council will host a demonstration of the new optical scanner voting machines Thursday.
The free event, open to members and guests, will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the New Tampa Regional Library, 10001 Cross Creek Blvd. A representative of the Hillsborough County Supervisor of Elections Office will make the presentation.
Council President Frank Margarella said the demonstration is "so people can be familiar with them when they go to vote. We wanted to do it before early voting begins."
Early voting is Aug. 11 through 24. The primary vote is Aug. 26.
The council will host its Connections networking event from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Aug. 28 at Stonewood Grill & Tavern, 17050 Palm Pointe Drive. Margarella said the free event will provide an opportunity for members and potential members to know one another better and for potential members to learn about the council.
The council also is preparing for its election of board members. Applications are available at www.newtampa.org/about.htm. Ballots will be mailed to members, and voting also will be allowed at the Sept. 25 meeting.
That meeting, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Pebble Creek Golf Club, 10550 Regents Park Drive, will include the group's annual business expo. The board will be announced then.

Beer Tasting Set For Saturday At Zoo
TAMPA - The 13th annual Wazoo will be from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. Saturday at Lowry Park Zoo, 1101 W. Sligh Ave.
The event, with more than 200 beverages and food samples from local restaurants, will feature music by Box for Pee Wee and The Paper Stanleys.

Registration Available For Leadership Training
UNIVERSITY AREA - The University of South Florida Jim Walter Partnership Center is accepting applications for the University Area Grassroots Leadership Program.
The free course at the University Area Community Center, 14013 N. 22nd St., is on Saturdays from Aug. 16 through Sept. 20, except for Aug. 30, with a banquet Oct. 10.
It focuses on developing skills and making contacts to help improve the community west of the University of South Florida. Participants can propose service projects relating to housing, education, health, safety, recreation and other topics.
Aimee Johnson, the program coordinator, said the course, open to people 15 and older, has been expanded and will include grant writing, research and youth mentoring.
"We want youth to work with adults to institute projects to benefit youth, too," Johnson said.

Participants Sought For Teen Program
NORTH TAMPA - The Ophelia Project - Tampa Bay is seeking applicants for the Ophelia Teen Ambassador program, which includes 60 high school girls from all parts of Hillsborough County.
The girls meet once a month, from 3 to 5 p.m. on a Sunday.
The girls discuss leadership topics and participate in community service projects. Ambassadors receive community service hours for all meetings and service projects.
The program runs from September through May. There will be an informational parents meeting Aug. 10 at the Ophelia office; the first Ambassadors meeting is Sept. 7.
The program has a $60 fee, but scholarships are available.

Democratic Women Set Annual Luncheon
WEST SHORE - The Hillsborough County Democratic Women's Club will hold its annual luncheon at 11 a.m. Aug. 16 at the Hilton Tampa Airport Westshore, 2225 N. Lois Ave.
The event, moderated by club President Bernadette Storck, will include a chance to meet candidates and door prizes. Tickets are $35. Checks, payable to the club, should be mailed to Pat Maloney, 12907 Lake Ventana Drive, Tampa FL 33625.

Women In Construction Plan Networking Night
SOUTH TAMPA - The Tampa chapter of the National Association of Women in Construction will host its third annual Networking Night, at which businesses can present products and services.
The event will be from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Aug. 4 at the Girl Scouts of West Central Florida conference facility, 5002 W. Lemon St.
Founded in 1960, the chapter hosts monthly meetings and participates in charity projects. It also offers scholarships for students interested in the construction field.
The exhibiting fee is $50, which includes a meal ticket; attendee tickets are $22.50, if purchased by Monday.

TAMPA PALMS - Doug Reintgen, director of the Lakeland Regional General Cancer Center, will speak at Friday's meeting of the Rotary Club of New Tampa.
Reintgen will speak about "Dealing with Melanoma and Living the Healthy Life" at the 7 a.m. meeting at the Tampa Palms Golf & Country Club, 5811 Tampa Palms Blvd.
The club is for professional and business leaders who live, work or are retired in the New Tampa area.
