TEMPLE TERRACE - Marjorie "Margie" Schine took center stage during the Temple Terrace Woman's Club spring luncheon May 28.
She was honored for 50 years of service to the club, but she was especially gratified to see those with whom she has developed friendships and that so many of the organization's programs she initiated have grown and prospered over time.
"I think I'm a better person from the inspiration these women have given me," Schine said. "They've kept a lot of these programs in place and that's very flattering to me."
Schine, 84, was president of the Temple Terrace Junior Woman's Club in 1958, the year it was chartered. Because of the 35-year age limit then imposed in the junior's club, the following year she helped start the Temple Terrace Woman's Club, in which she has been a major player since.
She served two terms as its president and, in addition to holding many other committee chairmanship roles, was also treasurer and head of the budget and audit committee.
In 1965, Schine introduced the idea and chaired the first committee to publish the club-sponsored Temple Terrace Guide, a city phone and address directory that this year celebrates its 43rd publication.
In addition, she served as treasurer for the city's 75th anniversary celebration in 2000 and in 2005 spearheaded a fundraising drive to renovate the Woodmont Clubhouse, the facility where the club holds its meetings. Schine also co-chaired its 25th anniversary celebration.
"No one could have anticipated the positive impact Margie would make on our newly formed club in the last 50 years," said club member and former neighbor Joyce Meitin, who has known Schine for more than 40 years. "She has made a difference in my life through her friendship, leadership and her distinguished service to our club and community."
Marge Groene, the club's outgoing president, concurred.
"Margie Schine has made a very positive contribution to Temple Terrace," she said. "We've been very fortunate to have her."
