TAMPA PALMS - Family of Christ Lutheran Church and Christian School recently began making space for an Olympic-size soccer field on the church property at 16190 Bruce B. Downs Blvd.
Trees have been trimmed and a silt fence has been put up where the field will go. The church is awaiting permits to begin tearing down trees. Volunteers will then work on completing the project.
David Haara, the church's senior pastor, hopes to see the field completed by October, just in time for Family of Christ's fall youth sports. The private Christian school offers sports programs, including volleyball, basketball, golf, cross country, flag football and soccer, for students in grades 4 through 8.
The soccer team, the Knights, is coed and plays during the second quarter of the school year. Participants are required to maintain a C average in all classes and attend practices after school. The team competes against other private schools in the Tampa area.
The new field will allow the Knights to host games on campus. It also will serve as a practice field and meeting place for other outdoor recreational events.
"Sports are a big part of school, and we want our program to be strong," Haara said. "We would like to have the best middle school sports program in Tampa."
The soccer field is the latest in a line of improvements made at Family of Christ. A year ago, the church finished construction on a sanctuary that seats 300 people. Classrooms also were added to the school.
