Hunter's Green Resident Honored

DOWNTOWN TAMPA - Linda Restall of Hunter's Green was named the New Guardian of the Year at the recent Guardian ad Litem Volunteer Recognition Ceremony, sponsored by Voices for Children.

Guardians ad Litem serve as volunteer advocates for abused, neglected and abandoned children in the child welfare system. They help represent the children's interests in court and when dealing with various social service agencies.

Restall, who has volunteered about two years, handles four cases at a time, attending hearings, visiting the children and communicating with social service caseworkers and judges.

Restall, who has volunteered with other charities, said, "This is the best thing I have ever done."

She said she became aware of the needs of the children through her work with other agencies. She also received a Judges Award, whose winners were selected by the judiciary.

Restall attended the May 31 ceremony and brunch on the lawn at the Stetson Law Library, 1700 N. Tampa St., with her husband, Larry. The awards were presented by Voices for Children board chairwoman Teresa Stinson, Guardian ad Litem director Charles Nelson and Dick Crippen of the Tampa Bay Rays.

Father-Daughter Dance Planned

NORTH TAMPA - A Father's Day dance for dads and daughters is planned for 4 to 7 p.m. June 15 at the Dr. Blaise F. Alfano Conference & Banquet Center.

The event at 11606 McKinley Drive is called A Queen in the Making and is produced by Stu Robinson. Proceeds will benefit the Children's Cancer Center.

Moffitt Plans Programs For Patients, Caregivers

USF CAMPUS - A free education program recognizing and celebrating cancer survivors is planned by the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute.

The event, Celebrating Survivorship, will be from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. June 21 at the Vincent A. Stabile Research Building at the cancer center, 12902 Magnolia Drive. The celebration, designed for patients, caregivers and health providers, includes a free breakfast during registration from 8 to 9 a.m. A lunch also is included.

Wendy S. Harpham, an internal medicine physician, long-term cancer survivor and author of "Happiness in a Storm," will be among the speakers. She will talk about obstacles to happiness after cancer diagnosis.

Richard Gross and Paul Jacobsen of Moffitt will speak about "New Initiatives in Survivorship Care and Research."

Reservations are needed by June 16 by calling 1-888-663-3488.

The cancer center also will offer a free education and support program for family cancer caregivers from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 28 at the Stabile Research Building.

The program, open to anyone caring for a cancer patient, will be facilitated by Moffitt professionals Miriam Innocenti, clinical social worker; Jill Blair, nurse practitioner; and Heather Bell, registered dietitian.

A light breakfast and lunch are provided. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m., and reservations are required by calling 1-888-663-3488 by June 24.

Power Lines, Wildlife Topic For Meeting

NORTH TAMPA - Stanley M. Kroh will speak about Tampa Electric Co.'s policies and efforts to protect wildlife that lives near the electric company's power lines at the June 14 meeting of the Tampa Audubon Society.

The meeting, open to members and guests at no charge, will be at 11 a.m. at Lettuce Lake Park, 6920 E. Fletcher Ave.

The club also will sponsor a free beginning bird identification walk 9 a.m. June 14 at the same location. Participants should meet at the Audubon Resource Center. For details, call Mary Keith at (813) 935-6115.

Chamber Plans June Luncheon

USF CAMPUS - The Greater Temple Terrace Chamber of Commerce will meet at 11:45 a.m. June 18 at Embassy Suites, 3705 Spectrum Blvd.

Wine Tasting Benefits Cancer Research

DOWNTOWN TAMPA - The fourth annual Uncork the Cure wine tasting will feature a variety of wines, food, live music, and a silent and live auction.

The event, sponsored by the Krewe of Zingaro, will be from 5 to 8 p.m. June 22 at The Tampa Club, 101 E. Kennedy Blvd. Dress is tropical casual.

The fundraiser will benefit pediatric cancer research at St. Joseph's Hospital, the only private hospital in Florida with a research laboratory dedicated to pediatric cancer. In three years, Uncork the Cure has raised more than $100,000 for the cause.

Patricia Embry, the krewe's community service director, is the event's chairwoman. Bill Nipper is president of the krewe.

Groups To Receive Funds At Rotary

TAMPA PALMS - The Rotary Club of New Tampa will hold its annual charity donation presentations at Friday's meeting.

Numerous New Tampa organizations and other charities will receive checks at the 7 a.m. breakfast meeting at the Tampa Palms Golf & Country Club, 5811 Tampa Palms Blvd.

The club is for professional and business leaders who live, work or are retired in the New Tampa area.
