TAMPA PALMS - Members of the Tampa Palms Women's Club gathered at Compton Park recently to award almost $8,000 in grants and scholarship funds.
The money was raised by club members through activities, including a springtime fashion show.
Club President Marion Brookover told about 75 attendees: "It is a great honor to bring together these groups. They give so much back to our community."
The money was presented to God's Pedal Power; Wheels of Success; the Practical, Academic, Cultural Education Center for Girls; the Resources in Community Hope House; and the Outreach Assisting Students in Schools Network. Representatives from each organization spoke about the programs offered to the community and to thank the club.
Susan Jacobs of Wheels of Success said the organization, which assists with transportation for low-income working families, is getting 50 to 60 requests per month for cars.
Mike Olsen represented God's Pedal Power, an organization in the University Area that provides bicycles to those in need. The organization has received a cash donation from the club for several years.
Olsen said he appreciated the opportunity to meet other agency representatives at the luncheon.
"I've met some great people and it has given me an opportunity to network and to share ideas," Olsen said.
Joyce Jones, a University of South Florida student, received a $1,000 scholarship from the club.
Business Association Meets Wednesday
UNIVERSITY AREA - The University Area Business Association will have a breakfast meeting from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at University Village, 121401 N. 22nd St.
The association seeks to provide a networking opportunity for members and guests and information in business developments.

Luise Burman Is Hadassah President
NEW TAMPA - Luise A. Burman of New Tampa recently was installed for a third term as president of the 600-plus-member Tampa Ameet Chapter of Hadassah by Sharon Sisselsky, president of the Florida Central Region of Hadassah.
Other officers are Janice Sherman, education vice president; Florence Antoine, Ilona Friendman, Betsy Marcadis and Elaine Viders, membership vice presidents; Anita Greenberg and Mary Zohar, programming vice presidents; Connie Green, Harriet Chesler and Lynn Velt, corresponding secretaries; Corky Arkovich, records administrator; Miriam Zohar, recording secretary; and Sharon Lasher, treasurer.
Event Raises Money For Haitian Orphans
NORTH TAMPA - Caring for Haitian Orphans with AIDS will hold a fundraiser to pay the rent in Haiti.
The Haitian-food dinner, entertainment and silent auction will be 7 p.m. June 21 at the University Area Community Center, 14013 N. 22nd St. Proceeds will benefit a Haitian orphanage with nine children who are HIV-positive.

Woman's Club Takes Top Honors
NEW TAMPA - For the second year in a row - and three out of four years - the New Tampa Junior Woman's Club has been named the Mary Clark Award recipient.
The recognition, given at the Florida Federation of Women's Clubs' spring convention in Orlando, denotes the most outstanding junior club in the state. leadership qualities in others.
The club recently presented $9,500 to the local Nathaniel Hope Buddy Break chapter. Club member Dawn Saunders presented the money to Helen Cotoia, director of the local chapter of the charity. The organization gives respite care to caregivers of children with special needs.
The money was raised by the club at its annual Night of 5000 gala.
Student Wins Busch Annual Pass
LIVE OAK - Joseph Hennessy, a fifth-grade student at Turner Elementary School, recently won an annual pass for a family of four to Busch Gardens from the Kiwanis Club of New Tampa.
Hennessy was selected at random from the students who were named Terrific Kids at area elementary schools.
The Kiwanis Club's president, the Rev. David Shelor, presented the pass at the fifth-grade awards ceremony.
Academy Of Hope Hosts Dinner
DANA SHORES - The Tampa Bay Academy of Hope will hold its 12th annual Celebrating Faces of Hope black-tie gala fundraising banquet June 21.
The event will be at 5 p.m. at A La Carte Pavilion, 4050 Dana Shores Drive.
Denise White is the mistress of ceremonies of the event, which will feature dinner, a silent auction, a salute to local unsung heroes and an after-party.
The fundraiser will benefit the academy, which stresses leadership for middle school and high school disadvantaged youth. Former pro football player James Evans is the founder of the nonprofit organization.

County Mayor Debate Planned For Friday
DOWNTOWN TAMPA - Tiger Bay Club of Tampa and the League of Women Voters of Hillsborough County will host a joint lunch meeting Friday to hear a debate about the proposal of an elected county mayor, set for the Nov. 4 general election ballot.
The event, open to the public, will be at Maestro's at the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center, 1010 N. MacInnes Place. Registration is at 11:30 a.m., and lunch is at noon.
Participants are former state Rep. Mary Figg, who supports the proposal, and former Hillsborough County Commissioner Jan Platt, who is opposed.
Tickets are $25 for members and $30 for guests. The reservation deadline is Tuesday at www.tigerbay club.com.
