UNIVERSITY AREA - A free event will give potential homeowners an opportunity to learn about the home-buying process.
The Home Buyers Preservation Fair, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 28 at the University Area Community Center, also will focus on how to avoid losing a home through foreclosure.
The event, open to all Bay area residents, is sponsored by the nonprofit Center for Affordable Homeownership, part of the Tampa Housing Authority.
Jerry Munoz, the center's manager said: "We are addressing primarily the first-time homebuyers, but also we plan to address the foreclosure crisis. It will be about anything to do with owning a house."
Munoz said private lenders such as Wells Fargo and Fifth Third banks will have exhibits, as will real estate companies and title companies. Other nonprofits, including the Corporation to Develop Communities of Tampa and the Florida Home Partnerships, will participate.
The fair will feature five workshops: loss mitigation, down payment assistance programs, credit and financial literacy, a real estate agents session, and home maintenance.
Munoz said prices for homes have dropped, and many are available.
"This is an excellent market for the first-time homeowner," Munoz said.
Munoz said he expects 300 to 350 people to attend the event, which will have door prizes, giveaways and materials to take home. Exhibitors are still being accepted.
