NEW TAMPA - Twenty-nine women were inducted into the New Tampa Junior Woman's club at its recent installation and awards ceremony.
The new members had volunteered as provisional members for community organizations including the Outreach Assisting Students in Schools Network, Everyday Blessings, The Spring, The Children's Home, Operation Smile and Basics for Babies.
New members are April Simons, Beth Bufano, Christa Anderson, Dalila Belinc, Jacque McKelvin, Jacqueline Searcy, Jessica Clark, Jessie Caple, Julia Loncar, Kathleen Vail, Kathy Livingston, Kim Fish, Kim Kenney, Kristi Lee, Kristina Trevor, Lori Bleckley, Maribel Chekan, Maureen Rain, Novenda Wilson, Rachel Haviland, Sharon Hineline, Stephanie Rotellini, Tammy Willman, Tara King-Miller, Tiffany Carver, Tiffany Valone, Tylinh Valentino, Valerie Casey and Veronica Kreisher.
The club is a nonprofit organization that strives to improve the community through service projects, volunteer efforts and fundraising.
In 2007, the New Tampa chapter donated more than $134,000 and almost 18,000 hours to area organizations.

Gerber Baby Recognized
TAMPA - Ann Turner Cook, a resident of the University Village retirement center, was recognized recently by the Gerber Co. at a dinner at the Grand Hyatt hotel.
Hers is the face of the Gerber baby, and the event celebrated the 80th anniversary of the company.
Cook, a retired English teacher, also is an author whose new book, "Micanopy in Shadow," recently was released. A murder-mystery, it is the fourth in the Brandy O'Bannon series. Featuring a journalist who is an amateur sleuth, the books are set in small, historic Florida towns.
Cook will speak about the book and sign copies 1 p.m. June 28 at the Life Enrichment Center, 9704 N. Boulevard; from 6 to 8 p.m. July 12 at Barnes & Noble, 11802 N. Dale Mabry Highway; and 2 p.m. July 22 at University Village, 12401 N. 22nd St.
Krewes Plan Fundraisers
TAMPA - Various krewes are busy raising funds for local causes. Events include:
Krewe of the Brass Monkey will hold a poolside happy hour membership drive 6 p.m. today at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, 5223 N. Orient Road.
The event is open to the public, and proceeds will benefit Hillsborough Achievement and Resource Centers, which assist adults with disabilities.

A live auction and silent auction will be part of the Krewe of Zingaro's Uncork the Cure wine tasting from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at The Tampa Club, 101 E. Kennedy Blvd.
The auction includes 30 minutes with Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio for a parent and a student; a backstage tour of Raymond James Stadium; an Alaskan flight adventure; four nights in a luxury condo in Colorado, a week at a golf vacation home in Helen, Ga.; a baseball autographed by Alex Rodriquez; handmade baby quilts; and original artwork.
Tickets are $50 in advance and $60 at the door for the tropical-casual fundraiser benefiting St. Joseph's Hospital's Children Cancer Research Group. For details, visit www.uncorkthecure .com.
The Krewes of Brigadoon, Cigar City, St. Florian, Mustang Sallies and Riders, and Charlotte de Berry will host the Tacky Tourist Party from 6 to 10 p.m. June 28 at the upstairs bars at Channelside Bay Plaza, 615 Channelside Drive.
Admission is $20 and includes drinks, an appetizer and games. Dress code is "the tackier the better." Proceeds benefit Camp Hopetake, which is for children who are burn victims.
Auction Includes Luxury Items
TAMPA - The DeBartolo Foundation will host Party Like a Rock Star with local celebrities and luxury auction items. The public event, from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, will be at Floyd's at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, 5223 N. Orient Road
Celebrities expected to attend include Wade Boggs, Brad Culpepper, Michael Clayton and Chidi Ahanotu. Auction items include a Costa Rica villa vacation, Super Bowl Party tickets, a Las Vegas vacation and a Couture handbag by Jimmy Choo.

Ramil Re-Elected Board Vice-Chairman
USF CAMPUS - Tampa Palms resident John Ramil has been re-elected vice chairman of the University of South Florida Board of Trustees.
Ramil is president and chief executive officer of TECO Energy. He is a Tampa native who joined TECO Energy as a cooperative education student while attending USF, where he received his bachelor's and master's degrees in engineering.
Rhea Law was re-elected chairwoman of the 13-member board.
University Mall Hosts Launch Event
UNIVERSITY AREA - KnowHow2Go Tampa Bay will hold its College Pep Rally as a kickoff to the campaign to emphasize four steps to get ready for college.
The event will be from noon to 3 p.m. Friday at University Mall, 2200 E. Fowler Ave., and include music, information and door prize drawings.
Among those scheduled to participate are Hillsborough County School District Superintendent MaryEllen Elia, University of South Florida President Judy Genshaft and USF football player Delbert Alvarado.

NORTH TAMPA - Betsy Lieberman from Tomboy Tools will speak at the June 28 meeting of the Begonia Society of Tampa Bay.

Afghanistan Topic At Rotary Club
TAMPA PALMS - Anna Hacker, an international educator, will speak at Friday's meeting of the Rotary Club of New Tampa.
She will talk about "A Ray of Hope for Women and Worker Children in Afghanistan" at the 7 a.m. breakfast meeting at the Tampa Palms Golf & Country Club, 5811 Tampa Palms Blvd.
The club is for professional and business leaders who live, work or are retired in the New Tampa area.

NORTH TAMPA - Judicial candidates have been invited to speak to the Republican Club of Greater Temple Terrace at the club's meeting Tuesday.
