Volunteers Help Prepare For Race
USF CAMPUS - Volunteers recently helped make 300 individual clay "milestones" that will be given to each cancer survivor who participates in the Miles for Moffitt on May 10.
The race, in its third year, has raised $125,000 for cancer research at H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute. About 3,000 participants are expected this year.
Among the 20 participants were volunteers from the Moffitt Arts in Medicine Program; Carol Shore, Moffitt artist-in-residence; Karen Dalton, founder of Miles for Moffitt; Chuck McGee, ceramic artist and University of South Florida faculty member; a USF student ceramics group; and USF art students.
To commemorate the day, the group made one large memorial clay "rock." Each volunteer also made a small clay rock, then stepped on it to leave an impression of the sole of the shoe symbolizing the "soul" in the rock.
To register for Miles for Moffitt, go to www.milesformoffitt.com or call (813) 745-2006. Online registration is available through Tuesday. Race day registration begins at 6 a.m.
