TEMPLE TERRACE - Greco Middle School seventh-grader Jeremy Montez was known for finding trouble.
The 14-year-old said he often blew off schoolwork and got into fights. That was until he became a man of vision.
Greco started the Men of Vision and Promise group this year. It targets male students who have had discipline problems and struggled with their classwork.
About 40 students met regularly this year with teachers and community members to talk about leadership, making the right choices and having a vision. Denise Anderson, a professional leadership consultant, volunteers her time to help mentor the students.
"I talk to them about what it means to be a leader," she said. "This program is about reaching out to the kids. We're not going to just push them aside."
Clarence James, a gang prevention coordinator, makes regular visits with the teens to talk to them about smart choices that will help their future.
"I think the fact that we take the time to talk with them and work with them one on one gives them a sense of pride," he said. "They know we care about them."
At the last meeting of the school year for the group, teachers recognized rising grade point averages, perfect FCAT scores and awards students had received. Montez received an award for the improvements he made in conduct and grades.
"This program has definitely helped me change my ways," Montez said. "I don't do drugs, I'm studying, and I'm working hard for my future."
As part of their last meeting, the students also discussed questions about things they had learned. One group talked about when a person should lead or follow. Another group talked about the importance of introductions when meeting a new person.
"Don't rush your words, speak clearly, and look me right in the eye," said Lindsey Harris, a volunteer who practiced with the students.
With the success of the program at Greco, group leaders hope to start similar groups in other schools next school year.
As for Montez, he said he now focuses his attention on a future career in construction or culinary arts.
