Club's Publication Will Be Your Guide

TEMPLE TERRACE - The labor and delivery of this cherished creation is unlike any other these women may have experienced.

The 2008 Temple Terrace Guide was a year in the making by members of the Temple Terrace Woman's Club. It was published in early May, and its "mothers" are at the stage of sharing copies of their pride and joy with the community.

It is the 43rd edition of what they say Temple Terrace residents have come to rely on as their primary resource for reaching friends, neighbors, doctors, shopkeepers, county services and city officials.

The guide's publisher is Linda Garnatz. Committee members Mindy DeVane and Liz Affronti researched and verified hundreds of names and addresses; Irene Bosek and DeVane created worksheets used to print the 152-page directory; Mel Jurado held a workshop to offers ad sales tips; and together with Garnatz, ad chairwoman Connie Smith established an advertisers database. Joe Ivey was responsible for soliciting donations for the guide's patron list.

Other committee members include Linda Wright, Maxine Kline and Sylvia D'Aloia, the directory's cover contest chairwoman.

The contest winner was club member Maryrose Owens, whose photo of the field of flags at First United Church of Tampa overwhelmingly captured the attention of the cover selection committee that judged about 20 entries.

"I was just really moved by the field of flags as I drove by," Owens said. "It made me think about all of the men and women who've lost their lives to protect our country."

D'Aloia said her committee of judges, who also had seen the display of flags at the church, was awe-struck by its beauty and significance.

"Everyone was amazed when they saw Maryrose's photo and thought the timing was so appropriate," she said.

A team of club members is in the process of delivering the directory to residents and businesses throughout the community. The volunteers' territories are based on the 54 routes set up many years ago by longtime woman's club member Jo Jeter.

"I had the pleasure of learning from Doris Pearce, the individual who had been the publisher for 19 years. She retired at Edition 41, but those 19 years were where the processes we use today developed," Garnatz said. "Although we no longer use a typewriter to type up over 150 advertising contracts nor write out lists of advertising contracts, and the mail we get doesn't always have a stamp on it, the basics are the same. We just call them databases, mail merges and e-mails."

Extra copies of the guide are available the Greater Temple Terrace Chamber of Commerce, 9385 N. 56{+t}{+h} St.
