Temple Terrace Churches Celebrate The Holidays

TEMPLE TERRACE - Community members will gather at 7 p.m. today for the Temple Terrace Community Thanksgiving Service.

Temple Terrace United Methodist, 5030 E. Busch Blvd., is hosting the event, which includes participation from several nearby churches.

People of all faiths are welcome to give thanks for blessings and to pray for those less fortunate.

St. Catherine's Episcopal Church, 502 Druid Hills Road, will celebrate the beginning of advent with a children's pageant, "Why the Chimes Rang," at 5 p.m. Sunday.

It is the story of a little boy's heroism, which saved a life, and his brother's gift to the Christ child, as well as unlocking a secret to a miracle.

Fishing Seminar Scheduled Tuesday

NORTH TAMPA - Tampa Bay fishing guide and outdoor writer Fred Everson will present an in-shore fishing seminar at 8 p.m. Tuesday at Skipper's Smokehouse, 910 Skipper Road.

Registration for the three-hour program is $25, and participants will receive his book, "Fish the Flats." Women and couples receive two-for-one admission. Tickets are available at Skipper's or www.skip perssmokehouse.musictoday .com.

Groups Get Into The Holiday Spirit

TAMPA - The holiday season is here, and many groups are having holiday-themed events with special foods and entertainment. Some serve as fundraisers for the less fortunate to help with holiday needs. Events include:

•Lamplighters 19{+t}{+h} annual Christmas Silver Coffee, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dec. 5 at the home of Suzanne and Roger Perry, 702 S. Edison Ave.

Edda Gibson and Nancy Leach are co-chairwomen for the event, which will feature coffee and holiday foods.

The minimum donation is $20, with proceeds to purchase toys for children in Metropolitan Ministries' programs.

•Victorian Christmas Stroll Preview Party, 7 to 9 p.m. Dec. 6 at the H.B. Plant Museum, University of Tampa campus, Plant Hall, 401 W. Kennedy Blvd.

The event will feature a look at the display, music and a holiday buffet of dishes prepared by members of the Plant Museum Society.

Sue Cox is the event chairwoman; subcommittee chairwomen are Becky Clarke, Cindy Hadlow, Betsy Best, Lesley Dobbins, Nancy Curtis and CeCe Lane.

• Author Les Standiford lecture, book signing and reception, 5:30 p.m. Dec. 8, Grand Salon of Plant Hall at UT.

Standiford will speak about his new book, "The Man Who Invented Christmas: Being the True Story of How Charles Dickens' 'A Christmas Carol' Rescued His Career and Revived Our Holiday Spirits."

Tickets are $20 for members and $25 for the public, which includes a ticket to the Victorian Stroll.

• Holiday Fashion Show, Dec. 11, benefiting St. Joseph's Children's Hospital of Tampa, at the Hyatt Regency Downtown, 211 N. Tampa St.

The 20th annual event will feature fashions from Georgette's and The Shoe Salon. Doors will open at 10 a.m., the silent auction will be from 10 to 11:45 a.m.; the show will start at noon; lunch follows.

Gayle Sierens of NewsChannel 8 will be the emcee and Dianne Cox will be honored. Celebrity models will be featured in the event, co-chaired by Georgette Diaz and Nora Musselman.

Tickets are $75 each and available by calling (813) 872-0979, by Dec. 5.

USF Football Awards Banquet Dec. 13

DOWNTOWN TAMPA - The University of South Florida football team and staff will be honored at an awards banquet Dec. 13 at the Hyatt Regency Downtown, 211 N. Tampa St.

Head football Coach Jim Leavitt and other coaches will present the awards.

A reception with hors d'oeuvres will start at 6 p.m., dinner at 6:45 and the ceremony at 7:15.

Tickets are $60 a person or two VIP tickets for $250. Supporters who cannot attend may sponsor a player for $100. For information, call Ciera White, (813) 974-7170.
