TAMPA - A man is being held without bail at Orient Road Jail today, accused of beating a 17-year-old boy with a belt and a 16-inch piece of wood trim, police said.
Temple Terrace police on Thursday charged Damon Keith Smith, 36, of Temple Terrace, with felony child abuse.
According to an affidavit, Smith and the teen were arguing at Smith's home on Deer Park Avenue about 6 p.m. when Smith removed the wood from the trunk of a vehicle and struck the teen across the back, hand and leg.
The affidavit states Smith broke the stick while striking the teen, then retrieved a belt and struck the teen several times.
Police spokesman Mike Dunn said he could not say how Smith and the teenager know each other because statutes prohibit releasing identifying information about victims of child abuse.
