Education Sorority Honors Members

TEMPLE TERRACE - Members of Alpha Delta Kappa, an international honorary education sorority, will have an Oct. 25 brunch at the Temple Terrace Golf and Country Club, 200 Inverness Ave.

There are four chapters in Hillsborough County, Alpha Rho, Delta, Delta Beta and Beta Zeta, which work together and recently elected countywide officers. They are Gwen Mora, president; Ann Newsome, treasurer; Kristi Ehler, secretary; and Anne Porter, chaplain.

The brunch will include a special founders' day program; those members who have 25 or more years of service with the organization will receive a special pin.

The Alpha Rho chapter recently elected its officers. They are Pam Tompkins, president; Loretta Campo, vice president; Cheryl Walters, recording secretary and historian; Susan Avery, corresponding secretary; Pauline Crumpton, treasurer; Josephine Agliano, sergeant-at-arms; and Mora, past president.

The group's projects include providing school supplies for elementary school children at The Children's Home, donating books to St. Joseph's Children Hospital, providing money for the Kids and Canine program, giving three teaching grants in Hillsborough County; and helping maintain the Alpha Delta Kappa Scholarship House in Tallahassee.

Teachers who received grants this year are Alyce Kushner, Cannella Elementary; Christine Cheng, Northwest Elementary; and Natalie Fitzgerald, Temple Terrace Elementary.
Canoe Races Set For Saturday

The Temple Terrace Canoe Challenge and the Mayor's Cup regatta will be Saturday on the Hillsborough River.

The Mayor's Cup, a 5.5-mile event for teams, will begin at 9 a.m. at Rotary Park and end at Riverhills Park. The Canoe Challenge, which is for individuals, will follow.

The cost to participate is $10 per team with a canoe and $15 per team with a canoe rental. Both races are sponsored by Temple Terrace's Leisure Services Department.

Dinner Benefits King, Wall Of Pride
King High School alumni Joyce Johnston and Casper Johnson will be honored at Thursday's Robinson vs. King football game. The two were recently inducted into King's Wall of Pride.

The 7 p.m. game will be preceded by a barbecue dinner from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Proceeds will benefit the school and the Wall of Pride, which recognizes outstanding alumni.

Three Krewes Stage Tartan Ball

DANA SHORES - The second Royal Tartan Ball will feature traditional Celtic fare and entertainment.

The event will be at 6 p.m. Nov. 1 at the Tampa Shriners Activities Building, 4050 Dana Shores Drive. It is sponsored by the krewes of Brigadoon, Highlanders and Shamrock.

The ball includes foods, drinks, a pipe band and pipers, dancing to the music of the Mark Anthony Band and songs from Joann Gilmartin. A silent auction is planned.

Events Help Local Schools

WEST TAMPA - Two local schools are hosting the following fundraisers on Oct. 24:

•The Higgins Ball. This first-time event will provide scholarships and tuition assistance for students at St. Peter Claver Catholic School.

The event will be at 6:30 p.m. at Higgins Hall, 5225 N. Himes Ave. It will include a silent auction, music by the Bob Jackson Memorial Jazz Band and recognition to former teachers and outstanding alumni.

St. Peter Claver, which opened in 1894, is Florida's oldest-continuing African-American school. Many of the school's students live in the surrounding area and need financial assistance to attend.

• The fourth annual Big Night. The event benefits Hope Preparatory Academy, which serves children with learning disabilities in kindergarten through fifth grade.

The event, Big Night in the Big Easy, is at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 24 at Mise en Place, 442 W. Grand Central Ave. It will include a Cajun theme with food, drinks and music by Swamp Logic, a jazz band. A silent and a live auction also are planned.

First Ladies Are Topic Of Presentation

TAMPA PALMS - Rotary Club of New Tampa member Ron Hurst, a former member of the Illinois Legislature, will speak at Friday's club meeting.

He will talk about "Working with Mamie Eisenhower Through Hillary Clinton" at the 7 a.m. meeting at the Tampa Palms Golf & Country Club, 5811 Tampa Palms Blvd.
