TEMPLE TERRACE - Linda Unfried, a Temple Terrace resident who is a co-founder of the Hillsborough County chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving, recently received the Micky Sadoff Drunk Driving Prevention Award at the MADD National Conference.
The award is given to a MADD entity or individual for accomplishments in implementing drunken driving prevention programs.
The presentation at the conference in Dallas included a video of Unfried, who has 24 years of involvement with the organization, in the Temple Terrace Fourth of July Parade.
The late Sgt. Ron Harrison of the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office was recognized with the Outstanding Law Enforcement Award, Individual. Deputy Larry Morrell accepted the award for Harrison.
Free Family Festival Set For Oct. 3
CORY LAKE ISLES - The first Fall Fusion, a free family festival, will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Oct. 4 at the Cory Lake Isles Professional Park, 10311 Cross Creek Blvd.

Community Council Plans Expo, Election
PEBBLE CREEK - The New Tampa Community Council will hold its Business Expo in conjunction with its annual membership meeting Thursday.
The free event will be from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Pebble Creek Golf Club, 10550 Regents Park Drive. The event also includes the election of the council's board of directors for 2008-09.

MOSI Recognizes Hispanic Scientist
NORTH TAMPA - Lydia Villa-Komaroff, chief executive officer of Cytonome and founder of the Society for the Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science, will be honored at the National Hispanic Scientist of the Year Gala.
The black-tie-optional event, to benefit the Museum of Science & Industry, will be at the museum, 4801 E. Fowler Ave.

Juniors Producing Anniversary Cookbook
The Temple Terrace Junior Woman's Club is accepting orders for its 50th anniversary cookbook.
The book is a collection of favorite recipes from Temple Terrace residents. The cost for advance orders is $15. Proceeds will benefit the organization's community projects.

Bucs Linebacker To Be Honored
WEST SHORE - Voices for Children will honor Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker Derrick Brooks with the Champion for Children Award.
The recognition will be at an awards ceremony at 7 p.m. Oct. 2 at the Renaissance Tampa Hotel International Plaza, 4200 Jim Walter Blvd.
In 1997, Brooks started The Brooks Bunch, which encouraged academics and citizenship. That formed the cornerstone of Derrick Brooks Charities. He also is a founder of Brooks-DeBartolo Collegiate High School in North Tampa, for which he serves as chairman of the board.
Voices for Children is a nonprofit organization that raises money and awareness for children who have been abused and need the services of a guardian ad litem.

Shrine Potentate To Speak At Rotary
TAMPA PALMS - Frank Dyer, potentate of the Egypt Temple Shrine, will speak at Friday's meeting of the Rotary Club of New Tampa.
Dyer, who is also a board member of the Shriners Hospital for Children - Tampa Unit, will speak at the 7 a.m. meeting at the Tampa Palms Golf & Country Club, 5811 Tampa Palms Blvd.
The club is for professional and business leaders who live, work or are retired in the New Tampa area.

Hillsborough High Focus Of Film
SEMINOLE HEIGHTS - The premiere of the documentary film "Halls of Tradition: Hillsborough High School" is planned for Oct. 4 at the school.
The documentary "Seminole Heights, An Intimate Look at the Early Years," which premiered in April at the Tampa Theatre, also will be shown. The program is offered at 3 and 7 p.m. in the school auditorium, 5000 N. Central Ave.
Author Ann Turner Cook, retired head of the school's English department and the Gerber Baby, will be a guest at the 3 p.m. showing. Cook is a resident of the University Village retirement community.
"Halls of Tradition," produced by the Education Channel, covers the school from 1886, when four students graduated, to today, when it has produced more than 38,000 alumni. The "Seminole Heights" film looks at the development of the community.
The event is sponsored by the Hillsborough High Alumni Association, the Old Seminole Heights Neighborhood Association and the Education Channel.
