Michelle Skelton, a seventh-grader at William IB Middle School, earned first place in botany in the junior division of the 29th annual Hillsborough County Science Fair.
Her project was titled "The Effect of Distance from a Swimming Pool on the height of Marigolds."
Her hypothesis was that chlorine and other pool contaminants stunt the growth of young plants. By conducting an experiment, she found young plants grown near the pool were shorter than those grown farther away.
Michelle's first-place finish earned her a spot at the state science fair in Lakeland this month.
Michelle is the daughter of William and Nadine Skelton of Temple Terrace.
