Deputies ID homeless man fatally stabbed in University area

A homeless man was killed near the entrance to the Ascott Place apartment complex off Bruce B. Downs Boulevard early Friday.

TAMPA - Hillsborough County sheriff's deputies identified a homeless man fatally stabbed in the University area this morning as Anthony Chatterton, 40.

Chatterton was killed during a confrontation just before 1 a.m. in front of an apartment complex off Bruce B. Downs Boulevard north of Fletcher Avenue, deputies said.

He was walking with a woman behind a medical building next to the Ascott Place apartment complex, 14003 Saulk Court, when a compact, four-door, white car approached from the opposite side of a fence, deputies said. Three men were passengers, and the car was driven by a woman, deputies said.

"The victim was arguing with them over some property that he said they had stolen from him," said a news release issued this morning. At one point, Chatterton walked to the front entrance of the apartment complex, where he was confronted by the men in the car.

The victim suffered undisclosed trauma to the upper body and died at the scene, deputies said.

The men got back into the car, and it sped south on Bruce B. Downs Boulevard, deputies said.
