UNIVERSITY AREA - Local health and social services agencies, along with community volunteers, joined forces recently to ensure children were ready for this week's opening of public schools.
They also wanted to offer some late summer fun at two events.
Hundreds of free physicals and immunizations were given Aug. 15 at the University Area Back to School Fair at the University Area Community Health Center.
Families also visited exhibitors for information about tutoring, family support group and afterschool programs.
Volunteers, including members of USF fraternities and sororities, distributed bags of paper, pencils, folders and spiral notebooks.
It's All About Kids, a nonprofit organization dedicated to education for children and parents, had its annual Back-to-School Bash on Aug. 16 at its site in the Carlisle Lakes Apartment complex.
About 25 children participated in games including relays and Hula Hoop contests while their parents attended a workshop.
Volunteer instructors in the program stressed the importance of communication between the home and the school.
The families also received school supplies and information about activities offered by It's All About Families.
