Woman Celebrates 100th Birthday

UNIVERSITY AREA - Sis "Estella" Erny got an early birthday surprise last week when her friends from University Village retirement community gathered for her 100th birthday.

Erny, who will turn 100 on Valentine's Day, said she was totally surprised by the well-wishers who sang "Happy Birthday" and "You Are My Sunshine" to her. They filled a basket with cards and greetings before enjoying cake and tea.

"I'll never get through reading all these cards," she said looking through the stack.

Earlene Gravis, chairwoman of the community's residents' activity committee, served as mistress of ceremonies for the Feb. 4 party and showed Erny 100 mixed-color roses for her.

Erny is an original resident of the retirement community, having moved there in October 1988, just weeks after it opened.

Originally from Philadelphia, she worked as a nurse. At University Village, she was active with the card recyclers' program, Vespers choral group and craft groups, as well as playing bingo twice a week.

"Overall, 'She is one of the sweetest persons here at the Village' is a remark that I have heard over and over by many that I talked to," Garvis said.

Among the guests was Lois Perrone of Carrollwood, who was Erny's next-door neighbor before she moved to University Village. They have remained friends since.

Tim Parker, the facility's general manager, gave highlights from 1909 including William Howard Taft becoming the 27th president, the first powered flight in Canada, the first cross-country automobile trip with a car driven by a woman, which took 59 days, and the founding of the U.S. Navy base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

He said singer Burl Ives and actor Errol Flynn were born in 1909.

"But more importantly, Sis Erny was," Parker said to a round of applause.

Program Receives Funds For Technology

UNIVERSITY AREA - It's All About Kids recently received its biggest single grant - $15,000 from the Verizon Foundation.

The money was awarded to the children's literacy program recently and will be used to increase technology at the nonprofit agency's center at Carlisle Lakes Apartments, 12520 Tinsley Terrace.

It's All About Kids executive director Wanda DeLaRosa said, "We will be able to set up a technology lab and use the Read About It Scholastic program."

Children in grades 3 to 6 will have individual plans for reading improvement and be able to select from a bank of stories and books, she said.

"We can gauge where they are and see how much improvement they have made in X amount of time," DeLaRosa said.

The computers also will be used at monthly parent workshops to help them find free resources for improving the educational environment in the children's homes.

About 30 children attend programs offered through It's All About Kids, which is seeking volunteers to help students with homework and providing instruction in arts and crafts.
