When Teams Compete At Pig Roast, Visitors Are Winners

TAMPA - The Rotary Club of New Tampa and the New Tampa Rotary Noon have teamed for the sixth annual New Tampa Rotary Pig Roast.

The event will be from 2 to 5 p.m. March 8 at St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church, 9724 Cross Creek Blvd. It will feature barbecued pork, chicken, beans, slaw and rolls. Also included are beer, wine, sodas and entertainment.

Teams will compete by roasting whole pigs overnight. A winner will be determined by a show of hands and crowd noise. Teams registered include last year's winner, Sir Pigs A Lot and the Knights of the Holy Grill, lead by Gary Callicoat of Cally's Sticky Bones BBQ; Louis and Donna Sinudom of Circles New Tampa Bistro; All About Grillin', lead by Michael Baker of All About Grills; the Mike "The Man" Wallace team; and one with Charlie Fanning and Bob Darby.

Lee Roy Selmon's will donate additional food with Pepin Distributors supplying beverages.

The event also will include the second Pig Nose Photography Contest. Couples will pose with pig noses, pig ears and other costumes for photography expert Peter Gambacorta. Rotary judges will select winners, who will receive a free breakfast or lunch at Rotary and additional prizes.

Warrick Dunn Next In Lecture Series

NORTH Tampa Bay Buccaneer Warrick Dunn will speak Wednesday at Brooks-DeBartolo Collegiate High School.

This presentation, at 1 p.m. at the school, 11602 N. 15th St., is the second in the school's Distinguished Speaker Series. The series is designed as a fundraiser and an opportunity for the students to hear special guests.

Dunn will speak about his life and his book, "Running for My Life." Books will be for sale, and he will autograph them.

John Ramil Honored By Scouts

DOWNTOWN - Tampa Palms resident John Ramil, president and chief operating officer of TECO Energy, will be honored at the 2009 Distinguished Citizen Luncheon, sponsored by Gulf Ridge Council, Boy Scouts of America.

The luncheon will be March 6 at the Hyatt Regency Downtown. Registration is 11:45 a.m. with the luncheon at noon.

Keni Thomas, an Army Ranger involved in the "Black Hawk Down" mission of October 1993, will be the speaker. A University of Florida graduate, Thomas is now a Nashville recording artist.

Women's Group Plans Networking

NORTH Women Mean Business, a networking group, has planned events for members and guests.

They include a breakfast program and networking opportunity from 7:30 to 9 a.m. March 3 at the Clarion Hotel and Conference Center, 2701 E. Fowler Ave.

Tickets are $12 for members of the Temple Terrace Chamber of Commerce and $15 for the public. Deadline for tickets is 4 p.m. Feb. 27.

A High Tea and program is set for 6 p.m. April 2 at Maggie's Tea Room, 10335 Cross Creek Blvd. The fee is $15 for chamber members; $20 for the public. Deadline is 4 p.m. March 30.

The group will also have a Cinco de Mayo party on May 5 with details to be announced.

Preservation Society Meets Thursday

TEMPLE TERRACE - The Temple Terrace Preservation Society will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday for a free showing of "This Land, These Men, The Story of Dade's Battle."

The meeting will be at Temple Terrace Community Church, 210 Inverness Ave.

The 25-minute film is the story of the Dade massacre, the 1835 defeat of the U.S. Army by the Seminole Indians. The battle started the Second Seminole War.

Relay For Life Has Busy Weekend

TEMPLE TERRACE - The Temple Terrace Relay for Life will host a viewing of the 81{+s}{+t} annual Academy Awards on Sunday at the Masque Community Theatre of Temple Terrace, 8825 N. 56{+t}{+h} St.

Doors open at 7 p.m. with the live broadcast at 8. The event will include a red carpet and celebrity look-alikes. The theater concession will be open with special foods.

A donation of $10 or more is requested. Proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society.

The Relay for Life will have a garage sale with several teams offering household goods, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Terrace Plaza, southeast corner of 56th Street and Busch Boulevard.

Author Addresses Noon Rotary
TAMPA PALMS - Author Lynne Hansen will speak at today's meeting of the New Tampa Rotary Club Noon. She has authored seven books of "dark fiction for teens."

Rotarian Ed Mattson will address the club on Feb. 25. He will talk on cancer research.

Both meetings are at noon at Circles New Tampa Bistro, 19651 Bruce B. Downs Blvd.

TAMPA PALMS - Nancy Newman, executive director of patient support and advocacy at H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute, will speak at Friday's 7 a.m. meeting of the Rotary Club of New Tampa.

Newman will talk about hospital and patient partnerships at the meeting at Tampa Palms Golf & Country Club, 5811 Tampa Palms Blvd.
