Event Benefits NFL YET Centers

HYDE PARK - Hyde Park Village is sponsoring a live music series program featuring musician Jason Young and benefiting the NFL Youth Education Town Centers.

The event will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Jan. 28. Admission is free, and the beverage sales will assist the centers that are at Mort Park in north Tampa and Jackson Heights Community Center in East Tampa.

Luncheon Starts Heart Campaign
WEST SHORE - The second Sister to Sister Kickoff luncheon offered about 100 women a chance to be screened for factors contributing to heart disease and a chance to hear about plans for similar screenings for the community.

The invitation-only event was Jan. 13 at Fleming's Steakhouse and organized by the local committee for Sister to Sister, a national organization, founded in 2000, dedicated to bringing free heart screenings and heart-health information to women.

Tampa is one of 13 cities in the country to have the 2009 National Women's Health Heart Campaign. Mayor Pam Iorio serves as the honorary chairwoman with her public affairs director, Liana Lopez, as the chairwoman.

Iorio praised Florida's weather, telling the luncheon guests, "Here we have such an ability to get out there and exercise our hearts."

She said: "Take time for your busy schedule to take care of yourself so you can take care of everyone else."

The campaign will include a free health fair from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 20 at the Tampa Convention Center. It will feature health screenings for cholesterol, blood sugar and body mass (the same screenings offered at the luncheon); healthy cooking demonstrations; fitness information; and exhibits.

Pat Shannon, the organization's national director of communications, said since the founding in 2000, the program has screened more than 70,000 people nationally and had more than 175,000 people participate in similar fairs.

"This was successful (in Tampa last year) because I see powerful women who were here last year and who are here again," Shannon said.

Margaret Norquist, a senior account executive at ChappellRoberts, was among those attending a second time. She gave the closing remarks saying last year her blood pressure was 190/80, the highest of anyone attending last year's kickoff luncheon.

That convinced her to visit her physician and improve her health through exercise, diet and other lifestyle changes.

"I really have felt the effects of this," Norquist said.

The committee also includes Paola Abesada, Stephanie Amberg, Angela Ardolino, Mary Jane Badillo, Shannon Black, Christine Burdick, Jill Cappadoro, Barbara Casey, Colleen Chappell, Melinda Chavez, Fay Culp, Margo Eure, Joyce Fisk, Julia Freeman, Brenda Geoghagan, Joette Giovinco, Kari Goetz, Irene Guy, Lori Hudson, Dianne Jacob, Joan McCarthy, Julie Milas, Christina Meloche, Cyndy Miller, Gwen Miller, Nicole Morgan, Sandra Murman, Ronda Parag, Janet Rivera, Laura Schmalhorst, Mindy Snyder, Elizabeth Vocke and Linda Zipkin.
