NEW TAMPA - An annual road race is designed to raise more than money.
The fourth annual Run With Pride on Jan. 31 is also designed to create awareness of fitness and exercise as part of one's routine, said Karla Gorsky, a parent at the school who is serving as the race director for the second time.
"It's to raise money, but it is about getting a really important message out - and that's one about the need for leading a healthy lifestyle," Gorsky said.
The race includes a 5K race and 1-mile run-walk. The events begin at 8:30 a.m., but on-site registration and package pickup will be available beginning at 7.
First place awards for top male and female finishers, as well as age group awards, will be presented. The race will be followed by a hot breakfast.
The event is organized by PTA members, but the money goes to the school, Gorsky said. The first priority will be new equipment for the physical education classes.
"We need everything from jump ropes to balls," she said. Other money will go toward health education materials and a teachers' fund for classroom needs.
Last year about 300 people participated and raised about $2,500.
