NEW TAMPA - Color, texture and spirituality describe the art of North Tampa Art League's February Artist of the Month at New Tampa Regional Library, Carol Northington.
Born and raised in Dallas, Texas, Northington studied art and design at the University of North Texas and the University of Texas in Austin. She later completed a bachelor's in business management at Rutgers University. She married her high school sweetheart, Leo, and moved to New Jersey. Together, they raised their two children, Gina and Jamal.
Carol and Leo retired and moved in 2005 to Tampa, where she again pursued her art career. Northington uses acrylic paint, utilizing different textures. She experiments with a variety of mediums and mixed media to create different effects. Finding ways to incorporate various elements brings depth to her work. In "Belle Fleurs" she used botanicals she found in potpourri.
Northington has a focus on design and color in her work. In abstraction, she creates a connection to God, making a spiritual bond with the viewer.
Some of her favorite subjects are animals. Drawn to the innocence in their eyes, she sees them as captivating and gentle. Her lion and safari series captures these wild beasts, yet we see them as peaceful parts of nature. They come alive on the canvas, quietly drawing us in.
"I bring a different interpretation and perspective in reproducing a subject. I want the viewer to have either an emotional reaction or be able to see many different things when they look at my art."
Northington uses charcoal, creating some stunning portraits. She is working on new commissions but will begin a new series soon.
As the secretary of the North Tampa Arts League, she has a full schedule of exhibitions including the Carrollwood Cultural Center, Artful Gardens Gallery, The Great Frame-Up, Beck Gallery, Jacey Gallery, Jimmie Keel Library, Exclusive Clientele Salon and The Jewelry Studio.
Her latest work can be seen in February at the New Tampa Regional Library, 10001 Cross Creek Blvd.
