Krewes plan Carnivale Games contests of pool, darts and trivia

TAMPA PALMS - The Krewe of Shamrock and the Krewe of the Black Swan will host the Inter-Krewe Council Carnivale Games.

The event, featuring single and team contests in pool, darts and trivia, will be July 18 at Peabody's, 15333 Amberly Drive.

Registration begins at 11:30 a.m. with the games at 1 p.m. A giant pot will be divided evenly to the winner of each category for his or her charity.

There is no cover charge to watch; competition is $25 per person. There will be food and drink specials.

Friendship Club meets Tuesday

TEMPLE TERRACE - The Temple Terrace Friendship Club will meet Tuesday at the Temple Terrace Country Club, 200 Inverness Ave.

The entertainment will be Jack Carney, known as Karaoke Jack. The theme is Summertime, and guests are asked to wear summer outfits.

Hospitality starts at 11:30 a.m., followed by the business meeting, which includes a vote on bylaws. Lunch will follow with lunch tickets $12. For reservations, call Janet Pangborn at (813) 985-0360.

Austin Curry honored for work

UNIVERSITY AREA - Austin Curry of Elder Care Advocacy of Florida was recently awarded the Rhonda L. Jennings Older Advocate Award by the Southern Gerontological Society.

The recognition was given to the University Area resident for "his outstanding advocacy and leadership for older adults and for modeling successful aging."

In addition to his leadership in the Florida Silver Haired Legislature, Curry's activities include serving as a delegate to the 2005 White House Conference on Aging and participation on the advisory council of the Kinship Care Center, Hillsborough Hospital Authority board and the Hillsborough Consumer Protection Agency.

Workshop series focuses on grief

TAMPA - Understanding Grief, a six-week workshop begins Monday at the Sacred Groups Coffee House, 4819 E. Busch Blvd.

The series is for anyone who has experienced a serious loss and for anyone who wants to give caring support and comfort to those who are grieving.

The workshops will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. and facilitated by Grace Terry, a mental health professional who specializes in grief education and bereavement.

Free-will donations will be accepted, with suggested donation $10 per family per session. For information and reservations, call (813) 412-5213.

Life's Treasures needs donations

TAMPA - The Life's Treasures thrift stores are seeking donations of reusable items for resale.

Volunteers are available to accept donations of gently worn clothing, household goods, furniture, jewelry, accessories, antiques, books and small appliances in working order. Funds raised support the end-of-life care programs offered by LifePath Hospice in Hillsborough County.

Beverly Wallace, director of Life's Treasures, said the increase in the number of shoppers has deleted the stock at the stores at 1918 S. Dale Mabry Highway and 4802 Gunn Highway.

Volunteers accept donations 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays. Life's Treasures also offers a pickup service for larger items. For information or a pickup time, call Terry Hudson at (813) 259-1028.

Moffitt presents wellness program

UNIVERSITY AREA - Knowledge is Power, a Moffitt Cancer Center program in partnership with the Tampa-Hillsborough County Public Libraries, will present Health Disparities and Hoops on Saturday at the University Area Community Center, 14013 N. 22nd St.

The event is sponsored in part by University Area Community Development Corp. Inc.

Knowledge is Power is a healthy lifestyle program that promotes wellness tips with activities in a fun, friendly environment for the family.

Twenty vendors will offer free basic health screenings. Attendees who register can enter a contest to win prizes such as Rays tickets, an autographed Rays baseball, gift certificates and a Tony Dungy autographed book.

The free program starts at 10 a.m. with an opening ceremony; registration is at 11 a.m. Attendees must show their library cards and sign a smoke-free pledge card to register. Library staff will be on-site to register participants who are not yet in the library system. Spider-Man will make a special appearance between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Participants can take part in instructional basketball drills during the open gym from 1 to 4 p.m. Then they can test their skills with a slam dunk contest, three-point shoot-out and free throw contest.

Council members speak at meeting

DOWNTOWN - Members of the Tampa City Council will address Tiger Bay Club members and guests July 17.

They will speak about the state of the city at the luncheon meeting at Maestro's at the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center. Registration is at 11:30 a.m. and the meeting is at noon.

Heart surgeon to speak at Rotary

Julian Belisle, a cardio-thoracic surgeon at University Community Hospital, will speak Fridayat the Rotary Club of New Tampa meeting.
